By SCOTT KIRK
Optimist Staff
The Hotdogs last year's
intramural football champ
served warning to the rest of the
pack wilh two lopsided wins
during the first week of action.
The Hotdogs opened their
season Monday witli a 42-0 win
over the Big Purple and came
back Thursday to beat (he Culls
30-16.
Sub T-16 the club champ last
year and a big threat to dethrone
the Hotdogs played only one
game last week dismantling
Edwards East 27-0.
Galaxy is the surprise learn of
the season if you can call
anything a surprise after the first
week. The Moonies were unim-
pressive according to opponents
before the season started but
they got their team together for
the season. They picked up two
wins 19-7 over the Knights and
a 34-0 drubbing of Edwards
East.

In the first big upset of the
season Edwards South beat
Frater Sodalls 13-0. It could be
a long season for the Prats unless
a heralded group of pledges
come through.

ship. Fish-80 vs. The Bad News
Bears was an Interesting match-
up of freshmen and married
men. In this case youth was
served but just barely. The two
teams tied 0-0 but the victory
went to Fish-80 on yardage.
Fish-80 safety Rick Ellis came
up with eight interceptions
which has to be some sort of
record.

week the Bruisers beat (lie

Most likely tlicrc arc as
many people who speak of Title
IX only under (heir breath as
there are (hose who praise it.
Despite all the confusion it
has caused Title IX docs have
a purpose and a reason for its
existence. Surely it has forced
changes that might not other-
wise have been made. It has
created changes that in many
cases will prove to be great
challenges.
Though I question the
decision of the Board of
Trustees to cancel all scholar-
ships in men's golf tennis and
baseball (hey may have pre-
sented a unique challenge to the
athletes involved in those partic-
ular programs.
Scholarships make the re-
cruiting game work and there
are many schools that could not
field a decent team without
(hem. Of course there arc
athletic programs that can't
function regardless of what
funds they have.
While scholarships draw a
certain number of athletes to a
school they also scare away
many potential athletes. At
every college and university
there are countless men who
were so-so athletes in high
school were injured in high
school or were ignored by
recruiting coaches.
To many of these people
scholarships mean nothing. They
would like to participate in an
Intercollegiate sport simply
because they love to play it.
Their only dreams and desires
arc to perform well and live up
to their self-expectations. Often
their desire to succeed is more
intense than that of the slightly
pampered scholarship athlete.
There are not many coaches
who would not love to have a
team whose desire outweighs
their ability. The good attitude
persistence and the willingness
to learn that characterizes that"-
desire cannot be taught to an
athlete. It comes from within.
That special kind of desire
can overcome most any weak-
ness in talent. That desire is
more valuable than any highly
recruited ability.
Perhaps there arc many such
men here on this campus. I
know there arc. Without the
scholarship scarecrow staring
them down perhaps they will
come out fiom their hiding in
athletic oblivion and make an
effort once more.
Because of this unique
situation in our men's athletic
program there is now new hope
for these people. There is
another chance for them to
perhaps find the key to the
dreams they have entcrtalnod
since childhood. They with
their desire and intensity are
needed more than ever.
They and their attitudes
may prove to be the real
cornerstones for our at Id e tic
programs to build on. For that
opportunity Title IX I thank'
you.
