Student's arrest withdrawal postpones play
By CINDY STOCKING
Managing Editor
The opening three per-
formances of the dinner theatre
"My Three Angels" were can-
celled this week after one of the
leading characters was arrested
for possession of marijuana and
withdrew himself from school.
Nelson Bennett theatre
director announced Wednesday
that the cancellation was
necessary because Kelly Harris
who Was to play one of three
convicts in the production
voluntarily withdrew from
school leaving "no one to play
the part and only 48 hours to learn
the lines."
Harris was one of three ACU
students arrested and charged
Monday by Abilene police for
possession of marijuana
following a drug raid at 1041
Grape. Three other men also
were arrested in the raid. (See
related story on page 1 1 . )
Bennett said Thursday that
Brent Johnson a freshman
drama major from Broken
Arrow Okla. had agreed to take
Harris part and the play would
open on Feb. 1. Johnson has been
working on the theatre's
technical crew.
In addition to the regularly
scheduled performances on Feb.
1-3 and Feb. 8-10 Nelson said a
show has been set for Feb. 11 to
accommodate patrons who had
planned to attend one of this
weekend's shows. Dinner for the
added performance will be
served at 7 p.m. Curtain time is
8:15 p.m.
A majority of the season ticket
holders who were to have at-
tended the first three shows had
been contacted by Thursday
afternoon by the theatre's ticket
office personnel and were
rescheduled for one of the other
weekends Bennett said.
"Surprisingly most people
were very understanding" he
added.
It appears that "more than
enough" seats are available for
people who already had pur-
chased tickets for this week
Bennett said but if necessary
another show could be added to
next week's schedule.
Bennett said he would
"strongly urge season ticket
holders to make reservations as
soon as possible" to insure get-
ting a seat. Reservations can be
made at the ticket booth in the
Campus Center between 9:30
a.m. and lp.m.
By Thursday afternoon
Johnson had learned all of his
lines for Act I Bennett said. "At
the first of the week it seemed
that we had insurmountable
problems but now we seem to be
overcoming the obstacles quite
well. I'm real optimistic right
now."

Bernie Kastner director of
security has resigned effective
today to take a position with the
Abilene Police Department
Garvin Beauchamp vice
president for student personnel
services announced Thursday.
Steve Meyer who has been a
member of the security staff for a
year and a half will replace
Kastner as security director and
Robert Reams a student who has
been working part time in the
security department will take
over Meyer's night shift
Beauchamp said.
Kastner will enter the Abilene
Police Academy Monday for 16
weeks of study and training to
prepare him for law enforcement
duties in Abilene. He said he
resigned because of "ad-
vancement possibilities there (in
the city department) that I would
not have here." One of those
advancements he said will be in
salary.
Kastner had served as security
director since February 1975
when Ben Holloway resigned as
director. He graduated from ACU
in December 1974 with a
cooperative law enforcement
degree from ACU and Hardin-
Simmons University.
He said he had considered
various other opportunities in law
enforcement before resigning
but added that he had "not been
in 'any hurry to resign.. ..I
thoroughly enjoyed my job and
the people I worked with here.
The job here will help me along
no matter where I go."
Kastner said he eventually
would like to get into the area of
criminal investigation but ex-
plained that all academy
graduates "start at the bottom
and work up from street ex-
perience." Beauchamp said Kastner
notified him before the Christmas
holiday that he had applied for
the city position but did not know
when his appointment would go
through.
Kastner was selected for the
academy training from a large
group of applicants Beauchamp
said. "He's a fine young man and
he's done an excellent job for us
in the department."
Meyer who was certified as
a peace officer during the
summer of 1978 "will be
responsible for the operation of
the security department on
Monday morning" Beauchamp
said.
