1979 Homecoming co-chairmen

Sara Brockman a senior from
Angleton and Jack Rosenquist a
junior from Dallas were selected
this week to sere as
Homecoming co chairmen
As co chairmen they will be
responsible for all Homecoming
student activities and will select
chairmen for nine committees
Homecoming will be Oct 26 27

semester according to the of-
ficial final figures released

The former record of 4231 set
last fall had been broken even
before the twelfth day after
registration when the official
totals are determined
The breakdown of students by
classes shows 1482 freshmen 845
sophomores 740 juniors 705
seniors 444 graduates 47 post
graduates and 109 special
students Men outnumber women

Rosenquist has worked on the
Annual Fund drive and with
Student Senate committees He is
a member of the Student Ad
visory Board and Mission

3907 figure topped the previous
year's total by 34
ACU at Dallas has fewer
students this fall 842 as com-
pared with last year's 864 This
total includes 117 freshman 56

seniors 337 graduates 6
postgraduates and 9 special
students Also in the breakdown
of the enrollment are 624 men and
218 women
Outreach and has been involved
with intramural football and
Hillcrest Church of Christ Life
Groups
The student activities that the
chairmen will oversee include the
opening ceremonies Freshman
Follies Friday night devotional
torch light match pep
rally spirit fire queen activities
queen s tea. Homecoming chapel
and football game activities
"We re going to put special
emphasis on parents' activities
this year" Mrs Ray said
We're getting more and more
parents who aren't alumni and
we feel we need activities for
them It's a hard item to deal
with but almost everyone we
interviewed expressed this idea
The co chairmen arc going to
take it up in detail "
Another activity the co
chairmen will try to improve is
the opening ceremony which will
be Friday afternoon
"That could be our new sparkle
this year" Mrs Ray said
' We're hoping the chairmen can
come up with something creative
that will tie the whole weekend
together "
The over-all theme for
Homecoming this year is "Strike
Up the Band "
Freshman Follies the musical-
variety show produced by the
freshman class has selected "A
Touch of Class" as its theme
Performances will be at 7 and
ACCO donates farm
for livestock research

A $7)) 000 livestock research
facility was donated to ACU this
week by Anderson Clayton & Co
for use on a cooperative basis by
ACU Hardin-Simmons
University and McMurry College
students working toward
agriculture degrees
The donation was formally
announced during a press con
ference Monday morning by
Robert Q Bledsoe president of
ACCO Feeds a division of An
dcrson Clayton & Co
The facility which includes
approximately 400 acres of land
located eight miles east of the
ACU campus will be named after
W Clifford Ithoden the late long
time member of the ACU Board
of Trustees and an Anderson
Clayton employee
Rhoden died June 8 at the age
of 73 He had worked for An-
derson Clayton for 44 years and
was an ACU trustee for 28 years
The decision to name the
facility the Clifford Rhoden Farm
was made on the redom-
mendation of Anderson Clayton
& Co and approved by the ACU
Board of Trustees
Bledsoe said Rhoden had
provided a ' commonality bet-
ween ACU and ACCO ' during his
selected
8 30 on Friday and Saturday
nights in Cullcn Auditorium
Jon Howard from Texarkana
was selected as Follies director
last week
' I feel real good about the
freshmen ' Mrs Ray said
' They re very excited and en
thused about it
She said about $50 attended a
meeting Tuesday night indicating
they wanted to be involved in
producing the show Try outs for
performers w ill be Tuesday
The Student Foundation will
again sponsor a festival of foods
featuring representative booths
from campus organizations
selling a variety of foods in
Bennett Gymnasium
Last years success with the
first food festival has led to an
increase in the serving times
The festival will open at 8 a m on
Saturday foi breakfast as well as
Fi iday and Saturday evenings
Margaret Schmeling Sawyer
Homecoming queen of 1969 will
serve as coming home queen of
1979
She and her husband Ike also
an ACU graduate live in Dallas
He graduated in 1969 and she
graduated in 1970 They have two
children Caleb SandNancie 2
Traditional reunions for social
clubs and classes will run
throughout the weekend Classes
beginning with 1934 and including
every fifth year up through 1979
will hold reunions Saturday
involvement with both Dr John
C Stevens ACU president
characterized Rhoden as "one of
those haidworking and effective
members of the Board of
Trustees who believed in and
practiced high standards of
performance in nil areas of his
work and interests "
ACCO Feeds constructed the
cattle research facilities at the
farm in 1968 and the swine
complex in 1972 to use in the
development of feed and feeding
programs for the company
The 400 acres include some
improved pasture and some in
cultivation as well as a
manager's residence and a
building that can be used for
classroom purposes Bledsoe
said The farm can handle about
1 500 head of cattle under test
conditions and has facilities for
about 100 swine
Bledsoe said the decision to
donate the research unit to ACU
was made because "many
significant technological gains in
producing less expensive meat
milk and eggs have come from
the academic area specifically
from the agricultural colleges
and universities "
He also said the company
thought the facilities could be
' best used by the university level
personnel and resources for the
benefit of the university com-
munity and further agricultural
developments "
Dr Keith Justice head of the
ACU agriculture department
said the contribution is ' the best
thing that has happened to the
