Mayes sparkles as
By DAVID WALLACE
Assistant Sports Editor
Senior quarterback John
Mayes finished off a satisfying
night's work by going one yard
for the winning touchdown last
Saturday in ACU's see-saw 28-24
upset victory over Southwest
Texas.
Under Mayes' direction the
Wildcat offense almost com-
pletely abandoned the ground
game against one of the nation's
stoutest rushing defenses. Mayes
completed 21 of 42 passes for 270
yards to become only the second

The Wildcats opened the game
with the kind of offensive
productivity they had not gotten
since the conference schedule
began. Mayes capped drives of 34
and 57 yards with a touchdown
pass to split end Odis Dolton and
a nine-yard option run of his own
for a quick 14-0 lead.
"Coach (Ted) Sitton called it
and it worked pretty well" the

Two completions from SWTSU
quarterback Mike Miller to split
Quarterback John Mayes (17)
end Billy Dunk and a third on
which an interference penalty
was called ignited SWTSU's first
scoring drive. After hurling a 21-
yard pass to Dunk Miller
covered the final four yards with
:S4 left in the first quarter to
make it 14-7.
The second quarter nearly did
the Wildcats in. "We played
excellent football the first
quarter and second half" Coach
Ted Sitton said in the locker
room. "But that second quarter
there were a few things we
weren't doing right."
Offensive problems by ACU put
the tying TD on the board when
left half back Bobby Watkins took
advantage of a poor reading by
Mayes and scampered 68 yards
with the interception to knot the
score 14-14.
Mayes took all the blame for
the play. "He (tight end Steve
Thomas) ran the right pattern"
the quarterback said. "I thought
he might hook back but he went

like he might hook."
The Wildcat's Hal Wasson had
to punt out of the back of his own
end zone after Mayes was sacked
at the three. That gave the
was a record-breaker against SWTSU.
Bobcats their best field position
of the night and Miller quickly
went to work on the man-to-man
coverage. Dunk was wide open at
the ACU nine for a pickup of 25
yards. Two plays later Miller
went into the end zone for his
second touchdown and SWTSU
had its first lead 21-14.
That lead lasted less than one
quarter. The Wildcats still
concentrating on the air attack
scored on their second possession
of the third quarter a 41-yard
drive in nine plays. A 20-yard
pass over the middle to Thomas
the LSC's leading receiver put
the Cats on the SWT 6.
From there ACU kept it on the
ground and tailback Steve
Worthey scored from the two
with 5:55 to go in the third
quarter. Martin Perry's extra
point knotted the score for the
second time.
The play that Sitton would later
point to as the only costly mistake
of the second half led to SWTSU's

defense denied a first down and

Whitman for a three-point lead.
In the final quarter ACU
revealed a never-say-die
determination that had not
previously characterized the
Wildcats in conference play. An
interception by freshman
linebacker Ronnie Phillips set up
the drive that resulted in the final
outcome.
Three straight runs by Worthey
got the ball to the Southwest one.
From there Mayes sneaked over
for his second touchdown to give
ACU its 28-24 winning margin.
"It was a great win" Sitton
said of his team's second in a
row. "I'm just very very proud
of the whole group. The dif-
ference in the second half and the
first was just that we had people
doing their job. We had passes
caught that probably shouldn't
have been and in the first half we
didn't catch some passes that we
should have."
Mayes was nine of 24 in the first
half and 12 of 18 in the second
half for his 270 yards. Several
Wildcat receivers appeared to be
bothered by the near freezing
temperatures in the first half but
that changed for the most part by
the third quarter.
"The first half it (the cold)
really did bother me" said
flanker Bobby Scheming who
continued his habit of making
acrobatic grabsjook-ea'sy. "It
was harcTto catch the ball. I
couldn't feel anything. But in the
second half I started wearing
gloves on the sidelines and it
really helped."
In spite of several improbable
catches Scheihing ended the
game as only the Wildcats' third
leading receiver. Steve Thomas
kept his conference leadership
intact with six receptions for 95
yards. Odis Dolton had seven
catches for 76 yards.
The Wildcats are now 6-4 and 2-
4 in the LSC. SWTSU drops out of
title contention with a 3-3 LSC
record 7-3 overall.
