HPU students take class trip to North Africa

Ashley Hayes visits with a Bedouin Family in North Africa.

Dr. Mary Carpenter
director of cross-cultural
studies led fifteen students
on a trek across North Africa
over spring break.
The trip was part of the
capstone Cross-Cultural
studies class Mission
Practicum that has been
meeting throughout the
semester.
The 10-day experience
was aimed at allowing
students to interact
with another culture by
experiencing the aspects
of their faith family and
politics.
Students divided into
small teams and were able
to "drink tea" in many homes
among the Bedouin villages
during the week.
Many of the women rarely
leave their houses so
when they saw the students
coming down the street
they would invite them in
and allow them to share
in the wonderful Bedouin
hospitality.
Some of the host teams
spoke English and the
students were able to
share their own stories of
faith and family. Stories
of faith are welcome and
some were anxious to have
questions answered about
"the Book."
One evening the group
rode camels through the
desert following a Bedouin
family. When they arrived
at their destination the
husband fixed dinner and
the wife made authentic
Bedouin bread.
The group was also able
to do some sight-seeing on
the trip. They climbed Mt.
Sinai as well as taking in
the views of the Red Sea
the great pyramids and the
Citadel mosque.
