Karnes In si became interested
in politics during die 2000
presidential election when
George . Bush narrow l
defeated A I Gore. Karnes
didn't understand how Bush
lost the popular ote but still
was elected president. Then
like main other young people
he began to investigate the
democratic process.

NCAA event no passes will
be honored.
"With the crowd we had last
year with the long line out the
front door before the game
we encourage everyone to buy
their tickets in advance" said
Mike Jones HPU's athletic
director. "There will be no
ticket sales inside the Coliseum
Saturday. You must have a
ticket to get in the door."
IfMcMurry wins Wednesday
it'll mark the fourth meet-
ing between McMurry and
HPU this season. The Lady
Jackets won the previous three
meetings by an average of 13
points. HPU won the meeting

vote for president in the 2004
race and of course voted for
Democrat John Kerry who like

"It'd be nice to play some-
one different but it really
doesn't matter" said HPU for-
ward Kim Hoffman. "We've
beaten them three times this
year so if they win we'll just
have to beat them four times."
Meia Daniels the Lady
Jackets' All-America guard
noted that HPU and McMurry
obviously are very familiar
with each other. "When we
play them it's more about
which team makes the fewest
mistakes" she said. "It's not
about who scores more points
really as much as it's about
mistakes."
The first-round bye will
enable the Lady Jackets an
extra day's rest after play-
ing three games in three days
Gore narrowly lost to Bush.
Karnes said he doesn't know
how he came to be interested
during the American Southwest
Conference Tournament
which concluded Sunday
in Tyler with HPU beating
McMurry 77-55 in the champi-
onship game. The Lady Jackets
didn't return to Brownwood
until late Sunday night and
many players obviously were
tired during Monday's 8 a.m.
announcement gathering on
the HPU campus.
"The bye helps a lot" Daniels
said. "We played three games
in three days. It's a chance to
get some extra rest."
Kielsmeier said "The extra
rest is a really big deal. To
play three straight days is the
toughest thing you can do dur-
ing a season physically and
mentally. We played Hardin-
Simmons and McMurry on
back-to-back days in the ( ASC)
in politics.
"No one in m famih is
really political. It just sort of
sparked m interest." he said.
Naturalh when Karnes
heard about the debate
between Democratic finalists
Hillar Clinton and Barack
Obama in Austin he wanted
to go. flic newsletter from the
Texas Democratic part said
there were no tickets available
to the public but because of
a public outer a lew tickets
had .ipit available.

Karnes said.
Karnes thinks Clinton's
policies line up best with his
beliefs. Me likes her stance on
education removal of troops
from Iraq NAFTA and health
care. At the debate in Austin
though Karnes said the most-
discussed topic was health-
care reform. He said he was a
little disappointed because he
tournament and those were
big-time emotional games."
The only disappointment
Monday for HPU was learn-
ing that if it wins Saturday
it'll be in the same sectional
tournament as No. 1 -ranked
Hope' Mich. (27-0). Hope
and HPU were ranked 1-2 in
the final regular-season polls
by D3hoops.com and if both
teams continue to win they
would meet in round of eight
on March 15.
If Hope and HPU both make
it to next week's sectional
tournament the NCAA will
have an interesting decision
as to which team will host
the sectional. Hope located
in Holland Mich. already is
hosting the Final Four sched-
uled for March 21-22.
Sunday's ASC tournament
wanted to hear more on other
issues.
Karnes thinks Clinton won
the debate hands down and
that Obama's answers were
"fake" and that Obama "coat-
tailed" off of Hillary's answers
for most of the night.
"I don't think Barack is
read to be Commander in
Chief." said Karnes.

Karnes real I loves the
Democratic part but thinks
everyone should be informed
of their favorite candidate.
"Everyone should know the
issues and have an opinion on
them" he said.

votes for or which candidate
one supports one thing in poli-
tics is unanimous "politics are

win over McMurry gave
the Lady Jackets 28 wins
this season continuing their
streak of equaling or improv-
ing their win total in each of
Kielsmeier's eight seasons as
head coach. The streak began
with 14 wins in 2000-01 and
was followed with 17 wins in
2001-02 19 wins in 2002-03
20 wins in 2003-04 24 wins in
both 2004-05 and 2005-06 and
28 wins last season.
"That's an unbelievable run.
I mean it truly is unbeliev-
able" said Kielsmeier 1 74-44
at HPU. "I know a lot of peo-
ple throw that word around a
lot in sports but it's unbeliev-
able what these players have
done here in the last four or
five years.
"I don't know if it'll ever be
duplicated."
