The Wildcats attempt to come off of a
tough loss to Angclo State and will try to
avenge a 1980 Homecoming loss to East
Texas Slate when the Lions come in
Shotwell Stadium Saturday for the 40th
game between the two teams
The Wildcats are 36-18 in Homecoming
games including a 3-1 mark against East
Texas. ACU defeated ETSU last year 19-
14. "They've got a good football team" said
Coach Ted Sitton. "Real typical for them.
They're a big strong physical team and
they're doing the same things they've been
doing a long time. They don't have any
real exceptional speed but they do have
some good speed. They're a lot like us"
Sitton said part of the reason the Lions
have had the same type team for such a
long time Is their coach Ernest Hawkins
has been around for 19 years.
Last weekend's loss to ASU dropped the
Cats from the NCAA Division II Top 10 but
their season is far from over.

The women's cross country team will
compete In the University of Texas In-
vitational this weekend on the campus of
Southwestern University in Georgetown.
The men's team originally was
scheduled to compete in the same meet.
Coach Don Hood said the team will travel
to Warrensburg Mo for the regional
NCAA meet Oct. 30.
He explained that the possibility of
athletes missing too much class and
budget problems will prevent the team

time." said Sitton. "If we had beat
Southwest Texas we would have won
conference. There are lots of big games in
the next six weeks. We can't do anything
about last week Wc have to take care of
our own business and we can't expect
anyone else to take care of it for us"
Sitton said the team has had good
workouts this week but doesn't know how
his team will react.
"We were nil disappointed In the loss"
said Sitton "and we've had real good
workouts this week. But we also had good
workouts before Angclo State. East Texas
and wc are in the same shape. We have to
be ready to go all the rest of the time or
we're going to be out of it." '
This game will match two of the con-
ference's top passers Loyal Proffitt and
Kyle Mackey and two of the top runners
ACU's Anthony Thomas and ETSU's
Ricky Dirks. The Wildcats tried to recruit
Dirks.
Proffitt continues to lead the Lone Star
Conference in passing with 1290 yards in
six games. Thomas is second in rushing
with 570 yards and he averages 5.3 yards
from running in both meets. The regional
NCAA meet will give the Wildcats a
chance to qualify for the national cham-
pionship meet in St. Cloud Minn. later
this year.
The team will take advantage of the the
weekend off for practicing.
Coach Burl McCoy said this will be the
toughest meet yet for his Lady Wildcats.
The University of Texas at Austin
Jlouston Lamar Rice Angclo State the
University of Texas at San Antonio and
ACU make up the strong field.
McCoy said that UT Austin will provide
in Homecoming battle
per carry. Split end Steve Parker has
taken over the team lead in receptions
with 24 for 474 yards.
Parker also is the new conference leader
In kickoff returns averaging 3a yards per
return. Most of that is thanks to last week's
100-yard return for a touchdown that tied
the LSC record and set a school record.
Although Proffitt leads the conference in
passing the Wildcat passing attack hasn't
been up to last year's standard nor this
year's expectations.
"Loyal Is struggling and isn't always
making the right decisions" said Sitton.
"You can't put all the blame on him. He's
had a lot of passes dropped. He threw Into
the end zone twice (going) for touchdowns
and they were intercepted. If they hadn't
been wc would have won."
ETSU averages 24 points and 337.8 yards
per game. Mackey has completed 56 of 119
passes for 868 yards and six touchdowns.
Dirks has 388 yards rushing but he also is
a threat to throw the ball. In last week's
game he threw a 67-yard touchdown pass
to Wes Smith. Smith has caught 13 passes
for 330 yards.
the strongest competition for ACU but he
believes his team has an outside chance at
the team title. "UT Austin has been run-
ning well" said McCoy. "Thcy'vo com-
piled a perfect score in their last two
meets."
One notable exception at this weekend's
meet is Texas A&M. The Aggies have
placed ahead of the Wildcats in earlier
meets.
-"Their coach doesn't want to lose so
he's going to take them somewhere where
they can win" said McCoy. "I don't know
where that will be. They would probably
around to make sure Evans lands. The Cats face East

"We're going to have to play some good
defense" said Sitton. "They like to throw
the ball almost as much as we do. They're
a lot like ASU in passing but they do a
better job. They have a real fine passer"
The Wildcat defense which allows 20.8
points and 321.2 yarch per game is led by
linebackers Mike Fundcrburg and Jim
Tuttle defensive end Billy Stiggcrs and
defensive backs Mark Wilson and Vin
Smith.
Fundcrburg leads the team in tackles
with 55 while Stiggcrs leads in quar-
terback sacks with seven. Tuttle In-
tercepted a pass and recovered a fumble in
last week's game. Smith and Wilson each
have intercepted three passes.
The East Texas defense could pose a
problem for the Cats as it returns seven of
the 11 players that started on defense
against ACU last year.
Free safety Den Boston and defensive
back Tony Lauro have combined for six
Interceptions with Boston leading the
conference with four. Linebacker Kevin
Rush is the tackle leader with 54 in five
games.

Injuries are still question marks for this
weekend. Maria has been suffering from
back problems and Noemi has an infected
toe.
Entered for ACU are Laurie Taylor Rca
Huddleston Cheryl Vlnsant Tina Lopez
Julie Browning and Lisa Garner.
McCoy said he is pleased with his team's
progress although he said it is not as far
along as it should be at this stage in the
season. Key injuries have hurt the team
said McCoy.
