Guessing again
I was frantic after Gary Hart beat Walter
' Mondale in New Hampshire. For months I had
' Kmmm nnittnrl iVtn AlnHAn lrll1rl ha AflOtf fn nfill
JFritz would glide to an easy win in the
r'Democra tic race.
: Somewhere along the way something went
: whacko. Hart beat Mondale badly in several
primaries and seemed to pull ahead of
Mondale in the national race. I was scam-
pering for excuses faster than Perky Pig could
say "T-t-t-tnat's ail touts.
But now that Mondale has whipped Hart in
recent key races things are back to normal.
The Fritz machine is rolling along nicely-and
Hart is having trouble figuring out his own
name and age. I'll try the election quessing
waters assain.
.Guessing the outcome of political races is a
tricky business. Voters' attitudes are tough to
read sometimes. An analyst has to look at
depth of committment for a candidate who's
likely to vote in this election who's working
for whom and so on and so forth.
However I can probably do better than
Phillip Dutton did picking intramural
basketball winners so I'll give it another shot.
Mondale and Hart will go into the San
Francisco convention as front-runner and
challenger respectively. Rev. Jesse Jackson
will dangle a large block of delegates and
popular support before their eyes but Will give
them to Mondale for a shot at a cabinet post.
Hart will slink off into the distance knowing
if he runs again he'll have to beat Ted Ken-
nedy in 1908.
John Glenn said he'd be interested in the
vice presidency if it's offered but it won't be.
Mondale will choose Arkansas Sen. Dale
Bumpers or Texas Sen. Lloyd Bentsen as a
running mate. t k im ..
The Republicanfrwill have their unity show
in Dallas and nominate ilonald Reagan and
George Bush. Everyone will sleep.
The general election campaign will be dull.
Mondale will lose the South and do poorer than
expected in the West. Reagan will make
inroads into labor vote because of his stands
on foreign policy and defense spending.
I'll take Reagan and give you eight points.
Public needs to see executions
James David Autry did everything he could to
make sure his execution was shown on
television but a board of Unelected officials
denied the public the opportunity to see it.
Back in the good old days authorities used to
hang criminals in the city square. Hangings
were right out in the open where the public if it
chose to do so could watch 'the final and most
serious step in our judicial system.
Time changes. Today we have all sorts of
people watching out for our interests. They say
J'The public doesn't need to see this. It's much
too offensive. Besides it might affect the debate
on the death penalty."
We say those executions are being done incur
name. If we choose to watch no one should be
permitted to prevent us. If watching the death
sentence being executed affects the death
penalty then so be it.
Lots of things were wrong about this decision
but what bothers m most is the most serious step
in our judiciary system is being done behind
closed doors. So much for an open society.
The basic tenet of our political .system is that
people should be allowed to educate tliemselves
on the issues and make their own choices. People
can do all the reading and studying on the death
penalty they want but watching the death
penalty might change their mind. We should
have that opportunity.
You may be for the death penalty because you
think it serves as a valuable tool in our justice.

system and as a deterrent to some types of
violent crime. But witnessing an execution might
change your mind.
One member of the Texas Board of Corrections
said "After seeing the last execution there is nq .
way I coukl be for putUngit on television." fj
Why? Doesn't the public need to know the
nature of what is being done in its name? If the
we aren't exposed to the death penalty who's to
say that we wouldn't change our mind? If the
state continues to execute criminals without
giving the public the opportunity to see the
executions then the justice system lias been
taken out of our hands.
If it can't be done in the light of day maybe it
shouldn't be done at all.

I would like to comment on the article in
Tuesday's Optimist concerning the conflict
between the ACU Jazz Ensemble Concert and
; the Ronnie Milsap Concert on Saturday night. I
hope to clarify whythe Jazz Ensemble is upset.
; Saturday night's jazz concert is not a .regular
; concert but the climax of the ACU Jazz Festival
; that will be going on all day Saturday. High
; school jazz bands will be judged in competition
; Saturday afternoon and the outstanding band
will perform in concert Saturday night along
with the ACU Jazz Ensemble. Carl Fontana jazz
trombonist will be featured with ACU Jazz
; Ensemble. ACU is very fortunate to be able to
host such an accomplished guest artist.
There will be a number of reasons why the
; greatest possible attendance is desirable at the
; jazz concert. First of all. it is no fun to perform to
I an auditorium full of empty seats. Larger
is audiences tend to be more involved in the con-
E cert and this gives the band more satisfaction
I from performing.
'r Second the Jazz Festival is an aid to
ts recruiting students to come to ACU. A large
' audience could help give high school students a
favorable impression of ACU and the music
department.
Third it would be a shame for people to miss
having hearing Carl Fontana perform in person.
.. A small audience could cast a bad reflection on
ACU. Major artists like to perform where they
' are appreciated. A poor turnout Saturday night
: could hurt ACU's chances of getting such out
standing artists In the future.
I appreciate the Senate's efforts to schedule
: quality entertainment such as Ronnie Milsap
: but I hope those in charge of scheduling en-
: tertalnment will be more careful and con-
: slderate in the future. The Jazz Festival was on
: the school calendar long before the Milsap
: concert was scheduled. Those in charge of
i scheduling Milsap either negligently failed to
I consult the school calendar or chose to ignore the

think it is the least the Senate could do con-
sidering the circumstances.

To the Editor:
In regard to Jay Friddell's column on El
Salvador I agree that federal aid should b
given with no strings attached but I disagree on
your advocacy of putting aside the moral
Question
Let me offer Option C which says the U.S.
Government supports the El Salvadoran
government because it won a lawful election and
not because of any U.S. interest in the country.
We condemn all human rights violations but take
no action in these matters because they are the
internal affairs of El Salvador.
We also would leave the revolution alone if it
were not for the fact that it is supported by ex-
ternal forces namely Cuba and therefore the
U.S.S.R. It is immoral and dangerous for the
United States to stand by idly while agressive
militaristic countries subvert smaller non-
mlliataristic countries.
Let me point out that it is not communism that
we are fighting (See Acts 2:44 45) but it is
militaristic imperialism. We are not fighting for
our own interests. We are fighting for the
freedom of the Salvadoran people to make their
own decisions right or wrong.
There Is no price too high for moral
superiority. Morals from God are the only guides .
to correct action. The only fights worth fighting
for are the moral ones". v
people who applauded.
Do you think this competition would be. con-
sidered harmless if it pitted whites against
blacks? How about Christians versus Non-
Christians? Or thin people against non-thin
people? This whole thing of Texans against the
Non-Texans is beginning to remind me of the
Jews versus the Samaritans. It's almost un-
believable that "Almost Anything Goes" could
follow so closely on the heels of a gesture of
brotherhood and sisterhood like the Spring
Break Campaigns.
Why ckm we lust admit this Texans versus
Non-Texans stuff was a bad idea and make

Q
The Optimist staff regrets these errors in the
Tuesday issue.
On the "Accents" page the first day of spring
was reported as Wednesday. Actually the first
day of spring was Tuesday .
m the page four story headlined "Debaters win
third at UTA meet" it was reported that the
debate was conducted at the University of Texas
at Arlington. Actually the competition was at the
University of Texas at San Antonio.

To the Editor:
I think that I as a Texan and you as a Non-
Texan should join in calling on our fellow
students to lay down their state flap and forget
this foolishness called "Almost Anything Goes."
A competition that breeds discord and prejudice
is something this school can do without.
I don't know about vou but I found it
somewhat disturbing that the Chapel an-
nouncement contained a question like "How
many of you Texans don't like the Non-Texans?"
