All year long they've had the upper hand. All year long they've been win
ner. Only rwlqe have they fallen at the hands of defeat. All year long Patrick
Ewing has reigned the glassy skies of the NCAA. And it looks as though no
one can stop him or the Hoyas.
' What has Washington D.C. created this time? Who can bring d6wn John
Thompson's 34-2 defending National Champions? Who can stop Ewing?
Can anybody
. Georgia Tech almost did. Ewing sat on the bench with four fouls and over
10 minutes left In the second half. The Hoyas were down by four. For the
i first time it looked as if someone might do what seemed impossible.
But alas Georgetown came through without Ewing. Which if you've
been following the Hoyas much at all is not a big surprise.
The Hoyas are an almost complete team. Ewing is not the only player that
makes Georgetown a dominating team. Bill Martin Reggie Williams Perry
McDonald Michael Jackson Hoarce Broadnax and Ralph Dalton are
players the Hoyas cannot afford to lose.
Broadnax and Dalton saved the Hoyas from the Yellow Jackets of Georgia
Tech while Thompson and Ewing sat side by side watching. The Hoyas
won the game 60-54 without the great strength of Ewing.
So vho of the Final Four can beat Georgetown? It would be safe to
answer nobody. But who said basketball was safe?
Remember the National Championship of 1983? Houston was favored
but look who won. It was the underdog North Carolina State on a last se-
cond alley-oop. Of course the Houston team of 1983 was not 'the
Georgetown team of 1985
That would "make it even more exciting if one c-f the teams in the Final
Four would upset the Hoyas
Probably the big underdog of the Lexington matchups b Vilknova. The
Wildcats were ranked No. 8 in the Southeast Regtonals when the tourna-
ment started. They knocked ofTNo. 1 Michigan No 5 Maryland and final-
ly No. 2 North Carolina 5644 to get to Lexington.
Maybe Memphis State head coach Dana Kirk was right in saying that the
team which wins his game Saturday will be the National Champion.
Kirk's Tigers have been a surprising team In this tournament as
well.MSU did what other teams had failed to do in the tournament; that is
stop Wayman Tisdale. Tisdale only scored 1 1 points against the Tigers. But
for the Tigers to stop Ewing may be asking to much.
. But all of this Is assuming Georgetown will make It to the final game.
Beating Georgia Tech wasn't easy for the Hoyas. Beating St. John's won't
be any easier.
. - Walter Berry Chris Mullin and 7-foot Bill Wennington have stopped Ew-
ing and the Hoyas before only to be demolished by Georgetown two times
later in the. season.
' But will St. John's have the power and magic they had In the two teams'
first matchup? It'll be Interesting to see. If St. John's doesn't stop
Georgetown no one will.
