Every Wednesday afternoon
Karlo Cadena a sophomore from
Dallas spends the latter half of
her day talking with cancer pa-
tients and their families.
"My first day a man passed
away. 1 had talked with him that
day and we had laughed
together and about five minutes
before I left he died" Karla said.
"It was really hard to handle. It
was really a shock."
Karla a Social Work major
with a Sociology minor works as
a volunteer in the Oncology Unit
of Abilene's Hendrlck Medical
Center three hours a week in
order to complete 40 hours of
volunteer work required for her
Social Work class
The Oncology Unit treats
cancer patients and it is there
Karla has been given her first
taste of the pain and difficult ex-
periences she forsees encounter-

The election held in Beckham

ed class officers for the freshman

Dr. Larry Wolz of the Hardin-
Simmons University School of
Music was recently notified that
his biography will be included in
the second edition of Who's Who
in American Music: Classical
scheduled for publication in
December.

Delivers Paper
Frank Beesley graduate assistant
of English and 1983 graduate of
Hardln-Simmons University has
delivered a paper during a con-
ference on Modern Literature
held Oct. 3-5 on the campus of
Michigan State University.

Languages selected Beesley's
paper from many entries which
answered a call sent out in the
spring of 1985 dealing with Latin
American writers.
Beesley's paper entitled 'Inno-

Fawcett has a one-person exhibi-
tion of pastels drawings and
photo-paintings at Texas
Wealeyan College's Gallery 13 in

Faulkner Paper Given
Dr. George Van Devender
professor of English at HSU at-
tended the Southwest Conference
of Christianity and Literature at
Wayland Baptist University in
Plainview Sept. 27-28 and
presented a paper entitled 'Out-
side Looking In: Religious View-
point in the Fiction of William
Faulkner.' The paper is a sum-
mary of a longer work which has
been in progress for some time.
Van Devender has served as
regional chairman regional
representative to national CCL
and assistant bibliographer for
the organization's journal Chris-
tianity and Literature. Expenses
were paid by the Cullen Fund.
Dr. Alcorta Published
Dr. Joe Alcorta head of the
Foreign Language Department at
HSU has had a review publish-
ed. A review of La nueva rovista
de las artes marciales: Dojo (a
monthly Journal published In
Madrid Spain about the martial
arts) was published in Lector a
review Journal of Spanish
language and bilingual materials
from Latin America Spain and
the United States.
Dr. Ribble Honored
Dr. W.C. 'Prof Ribble of
Albuquerque assistant vice presi-
dent for development at HSU
who has represented the Universi-
ty in New Mexico has been cited
for 45 years of service.
Ribble accepted the part-time
position in 1971 after retiring as
executive secretary of the New

"This work is preparing me
because these people go through
hard times" Karla said. "They
have to deal with financial needs
and whether or not the patient is
going to die."
"I think seeing these people
handle their problems is helping
me see how they feel" said
Karla.
Karla's duties include running
errands for the nurses and talking
with the patients and their
families.
"You'd expect patients here to
be in a bad mood or depressed
or detensive all the time Karla
observed "but everyone is very
nice. They're even happy."
"Families are ready to talk"
Karla continued. "All I have to
do is Just listen. They need to tell
somebody and I Just listen."

In celebration of the first
amendment the library display In
Sandefer shows examples of ban-
ned books from Homer to Hem-
ingway. 1985 is the 250th an-
niversary of the John Peter
Zenger trial that established the
first important victory for
freedom of the press in the North
American colonies.
Mexico Baptist Foundation. He
first Joined the HSU faculty in
1927 as Instructor in sociology
and economics and left In 1956 to
serve as chairman of the division
of business and social studies at
Ouachita Baptist College in
Arkadelphia Ark. After three
years with the Arkansas college
he accepted the post as executive
secretary of the New Mexico Bap-
tist Foundation and Church Loan
Corp.

David Smith a former pastor
of First Baptist Church of Flora
Vista N.M. and director of ad-
missions at Hardln-Simmons
University here since 1981 has
resigned effective Nov. 1 to
become dean of admissions at
Belmont College Nashville
Tenn.
Belmont College is a Tennessee
Baptist coed institution.

Smith served for serveral mon-
ths as associate director of admis
School of Nursing receives approval
The Abilene Intercollegiate
School of Nursing received initial
accreditation in September for
teaching the associate of science
in nursing degree.
The Board of Nurse Examiners
for the State of Texas gave AISN
approval in January 1985 to
develop the first year curriculum
for the associate program.
Initial accreditation was
granted after the curriculum was
submitted in September.
The 74 credit hour program
said Dr. Elaine Forrest dean of
the School of Nursing is "to
prepare people to be eligible to
write the National Council of
State Board's Licensure Ex-
amination for licensure as
registered nurses."
AISN will be able to apply for
full accreditation for the
associate program after the first
graduates who will graduate in
May 1987 write the Licensure
preparation for his career after
college.
Paul is a member of Pioneer
Drive Baptist Church and is a
Student Congress representative
for the HSU Sophomore Class.
Dr. Fletcher
Publishes
Encouraging students to take
the inititive to learn while in col-
lege was the theme of an article
written by Hardin-Simmons
University President Dr. Jesse C.
Fletcher and published in the
September issue of The Student.
Dr. Fletcher's essay entitled
'Learning: A Do-It Yourself Pro-
ject' called the passing of
students through required
courses of English history and
science with little more than
minimum knowledge of the sub-
ject a 'tragedy.' Students should
make the most of the doors to
learning provided in college Dr.
Fletcher urged especially Chris-
tian students.

director of admissions. Prior to
that he had worked from 1975-81
as a field representative for North
Texas and New Mexico for HSU
and as a full-time admissions
counselor from May 1974 to
September 1975. Smith plans to
work on a doctorate at Vander-
bilt. 'Every opportunity that I have
had in education has been a result
of my relationship with Hardin
Simmons. I always will feel an in-
tense loyalty to my alma mater
and a strong sense of gratitude'
he said. Smith is a 1974 graduate
of HSU and earned the master of
divinity degree at Southwestern
Examination in June 1987.
New faculty members have
been hired to teach the program.
Barbara Fouts will be the pro-
gram director and Rebecca
Cheek will be an assistant pro-
fessor. Additional faculty will be
added later in the year.
Forrest said students must
complete 21 hours of general
education requirememts before
they may enter the nursing se-
quence. The school will admit
students into the associate nurs-
ing sequence each January
beginning in January 1986.
The goal of the new associate
program said Forrest Is "to
prepare people to practice as
registered nurses in secondary
health care setting."
Forrest said secondary health
the college opportunity to learn
and simply sets out to secure a
diploma' said Dr. Fletcher.

Cynthia Standefer who plays
the principal flute for the Abilene
Philharmonic has joined the
HSU School of Music adjunct
faculty as a lecturer in flute. She
has earned both the bachelor of
music and master of music
degrees from Texas Tech Univer-

dent Convention on the campus
of Baylor University in Waco on
Oct. 11-13.

The difference in the associate
program and the bachelor pro-
gram is that the bachelor pro-
gram is more in depth than the
shorter associate program. For-
rest said a nurse with an associate
of science in nursing degree Is
prepared to be a "general bedside
staff nurse" while a nurse with a
bachelor of science in nursing
degree is a nurse practitioner who
can function in any type of setting.
