THE SIMMONS BRAND
"Seven Cowboys Turn In Purple Jerseys Last Time Thanksgiving
1ST
Valuable Men Lost
By Graduation
This Year
George Parks
- When tho final eun was fired at
the close of the Thanksgiving Day
strugglo -with tho Howard Pnyno
Yellow Jackets it marked not only
the close of the game and the 1027
footSall season but to seven members
of tho Purplo and Gold clad crew rep-
resenting Simmons University It
meant tho passing of' tholr football
careers tho last quarter played and
the moleskin uniforms to be turned in
for tho last time Alternate-Captains
Melvin "Pittman and Herring Bounds
Harold "Walker; Leonard Lynch Leroy
Jennings Otis Moore and Tommy Mc-
Collum have gone po far as football
is concerned to Join tho ranks of the
exes.
Five of theso passing heroes aro
four year men only Mooro and Mc-
Collum having played less than this.
Moore has been on tho team for two
years and would have been a four
year man had he not gono to Rice his
first year and been ineligible in his
second. McCollum did not como out
for the eleven until this season.
Be Missed Next Year
Each of these men has mado a name
for himself in Simmons and in this
section of the state. Their passing
will greatly weaken the Cowboys of
1028 and the old eleven will not seem
tho same without them. Bridges will
have a task before him in finding ma-
terial to replace theso seven veterans.
Pittman came to Simmmons as a
fullback but played only" one gamo at
that position beforo Shotwoll and
Payne shifted him to contcr As a
pivot man he won wido recognition
and last year was chosen as all-conference
center and Amis of Howard
Payne 'picked him as the most valu-
able man in tho conference. Pitt is
a grcaUefcnsive man and never fails
to shoot the ball fast and truo to
the backs.' He is tho outstanding
center of the loop this season and will
probably be chosen again as the best
in the organization.
Bounds was an all-stato end beforo
coming to Simmons and has been an
all-conference mnn for the past two
seasons. "Doodles" was injured in
his freshman year and had to drop
ut of school after playing in only one
or two games. Just beforo tho
Howard Payne game in his second
year he was ruled ineligible because
of this but was picked as an all-conference
man anyway. His game
against the Jackets last year was the
best end play ever seen In this section
although he has been injured some
this fall he is practically certain of a
unanimous selection as conference end.
Walker vs. Jackets
Walker came Into prominenco late
In tho season of '24 and began getting
Into the gamo fairly regularly. -His
.greatest feat was a 70 yard march
down tho field for a. touchdown
against Howard Payne carrying tho
ball by himself for all of this distance.
Since then ho has earned tho name of
"Three Yard" Walker because of his
consistent lino plunging and when a
few yards aro needed the Simmons
fans Bay "Give it to Walkor."
Moore is one of the best ends in tho
"Big Six" and only the presence of
such unusually good men as Bounds
and Lingo could keep him off of Jho
conferenco team. Red is a hard
worker and has shown up this year as
a fine pass receiver and has accounted
for several touchdowns by this route.
Very few men have ever circled him
and these few aro still congratulating
themselves.
".t Leroy lg also an end and has a fine
record for his four years ln Slm-
rmons. "Whllehe has never received
(the publicity that some men have ho
Is a steady dependable man and can
bo counted on to play a consistently
good game. Ho has plenty of fight-
ing spirit and no halfback ever got
'plcasuro out of trying to take him out
fo'f a playv
' Pass Receivers Go
t Lynch Is another man who has
never been widely acclaimed but who
is of the steady plugging typo that
can always put up a good game never
pf the best but always Consistently
Tabdvo the average. Leonard usually
gets off slow and comos along fast
jn tho latter part of tho seasons-gets
better the further ho goes. Ho stands
out In pass receiving and in short
plunges at the line whore a few yards
'are needed for first downs. .
McCollum Is the fastest man on the
team but because of his lack of ex
perience In college football has failed
to make the regular team this fall but
(has been one of the most needed re
serves. He is especially good In tak-
ing' passes and in breaking them up.

"Doodles" Bounds
Tho only mombers of tho all-Texas
Conference team who was tho un-
animous choice of coaches.
Because of his speed he has been used
a great deal against teams known to
depend on- the aerial system of foot-
ball. Tommy played a great part In
tho early touchdown scored on Texas
Tech in the first part of the season
when he snatched a pass and dashed
to the two yard lino beforo he was
brought down and in other instances
he has placed the Cowboys in scor-
ing position whero short plunges
would put tho ball over.
Gone but not forgotten. Although
these men have played their last
games in their purplo jersics their
'names will 'not be allowed to fade In
the minds of those who have been on
tho sidelines with them through this
and past seasons nor shall the Sim-
monsites who aro coming on bo al-
lowed to neglect their memories.

The local paper took a peculiar
twist in giving its all-conference
football team for the "Big Six"
in placing Wright of the Yellow
Jackets on the eleven as first
team center. So far as has been
found out this is the only paper
which dees not accord this posi-
tion to "Swede" Pittman. The
Waxahachie Daily Light ran se-
lections from 21 coaches and
sports writers and Pittman was
named center on 13 of them and
the over 8 votes were divided
between-Wright Moore of Trin-
ity and Savage of Austin Col-
lege. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram
gives Pittman the place
and it seems to be generally
understood that he is the best
center In the conference except
in the paper referred to in the
opening sentence.
Wo'll have to admit that Dad
Amis of Howard Payne is not the
sport wo thought he was since he
selected Wright on his all-conference
team. Pittman outplayed his man
badly in the Thanksgiving game and
we thought that Amis would be fair
enough to givo Pitt tho selection. If
getting about 40 percent of the
tackles and kicking a field goal for
the winning points is not doing
pretty good what did Wright have
to recommend him?
Some coaches are inclined to
give their men lots of credit in
picking 'these all conference
teams- Cawthon of Austin Col-
lege picked 5 of his men on Ms
first string eleven for the con-
ference and-2 on the second team
and resigned the next day be-
cause he said ho had no ma-
terial. Looks bad for the other
schools if he had no material
and yet 7 of them a're the best
in the loop. And if they were
so good how come he finishes
the season with a standing of
.167.
Coach Morsls of A. C. C. picked 7
of his men on his all-T. I. A. A. ele-
ven and tho other 4 on tho second
team. Medley of the champion Mc-
Murry Indiams named only 2 of his
warriors on tho first team and 2 on
the second team.
Out of 21 votes mentioned in the
Waxahachie paper 21 selected Her-
ring uounas as ngnt end on the

mythical team. The other end was
divided between Lingo of Austin
College Rhome of Trinity Allen of
Trinity and Lehmborg of South-
western. Lingo got the most votes
and the end but he lacked a great
deal of being the unanimous choice
chat "Doodles" was. The sports
2(11 tor of the Waxahachie Light said
-hat even if he didn't get to see
Bounds play this year he saw him
two years ago and that was enough
for him. .We would like to predict that
if Red Moore Is back next year
as It seems likely now that he
will that one Red Moore will be
picked as one of the ends for the
all-conference team. He is a
good defensive man and can take
passes right and left and we be-
lieve that he will get just recog-
nition next year. When Simmons
wns In action everybody wanted
to watch Bounds and conse-
quently overlooked Red not
hardly so good an end to be sure
but good enough to make any
all-T. C. eleven next year now
that "Doodles" Is gono and any-
one can pick two ends. This
year they had just one pick for
Doodles was a cinch.
Wo had some mighty good words
spilled into our ears right after the
game with the Jackets when Ed T.
Cox told us that ho would be in
school after Christmas and thus bo
eligible for -the team next fall. In
our opinion Ed T. can make the nll-
anything team. He is the best stiff-
armor in these parts in recent years
fast as a streak for a big man and
it usually takes about a half dozen
to get him down. Ho broko Howard
Payne's heart with his 40 yard run
for a touchdown last year after in-
tercepting a pass to give the Cow-
boys a 7-G lead and we wouldn't be
surprised if he did something equally
dirty from tho Jacket viewpoint noxt
fall. ...
It seems that everybody in
Simmons got about half of their
kick out of the Howard Payne
game in rejoicing for Coaches
Cranfill and Anderson. There

may be better coaches though
we doubt It but at least there
are none better liked by their
men or by the students at large.
Both of them are friendly ready
to greet any and every one with
a smile and good word. They
got a lot of tough breaks this
fall but we do not feel nor do
any of the men that anything
lacking in tho team was their
fault. To beat Howard Payne
and finish with only one con-
ference loss ia a record that only
too few bf our coaches Ijave had
and we think that our two who
did so well this fall are due a
great deal of appreciation from
the student body. They took a
green team and made it what it
was and the way In which the
Cowboys outplayed the would be
champs last week reflects great
credit on their coaching.
Well guess we had better bo turn
ing our eyes forward to tho basket-
ball icason about now. With 8 let-
tcrmen back nnd a whole herd of
new material it looks like a hard
winter for tho other five schools in
the loop. Howard Payne will not be
as strong as she was last year from
present indications but St. Edwards
and Southwestern should be about
the same. Trinity ond Austin Col
lego didn't go over very big last
year so it looks as if the Cowboys
Will start the season with an even
shot at tho title. That's all we want.
We're glad this tournament busi-
ness in basketball has been cut out
and the teams make their records as
they go. It saves some school from
losing a lot of money like we did
last year and at the same time keeps
the teams pepped up all year and
gives the fans some interest in the
campaign. If only the tournament
games count on tho championship it
has a tendency to slow up the early
games and who could work up much
enthusiasm unless something do-
pende don tho outcome of tho con-
test. So Cowboys let's have that old
basketball champlonshipl

When Xerxes
' I 'HE great Persian ruler gazed from a hill--
top upon his vast army of a million men.
It was the largest army that had ever existed.
And he turned away with tears in his eyes
because in a hundred yeara all trace of it
would be gone. That army was a symbol of
power destructive and transient.
Today in one machine now being built in the
General Electric shops there is combined
the muscular energy of two million men. This
great machine a steam turbine is also a
symbol of power a new power that is con-
structive and permanent.
Its unprecedented size a record in construc-
tion of such machines is a pledge to the people
that the electrical industry is on the march
ever on the alert to supply plenty of electricity
at a low cost to all.
