pulled down from tho top berth In
the .Texas Conference title race 'Mon-
day and Tuesday nights when they
dropped a couple of games to the
Cowboys losing Monday night by a
80 to 21 count. The defeat was even
more decisive Tuesday night when
the Cowboys took tho big end of a
33 to 10 score.
"The derisiveness of the defeat 'the
first nlghtTdld not como until tho last
ton minutes of play when Fitzgerald
and T. "McColIum broke looso to Bfcorc

rapid succession. Johnny Gregg andt

SOU.WESTERtf WIrjS FROM
TRINITY THURSDAY
Southwestern defeated tho
Trinity baskoteers in George-
town Thursday night by a 26 to
15 count. The Pirates will play
the Trinity Bengals again to-
night and should Trinity win
this gamo it will throw South-
western in a tie With the Cow-
boys for top berth in tho con-
ference title race. Tho dope
bucket wilt havo to be upset if
tho Tigers win tho game but it
is not at all Impossible. Tho
Trlnfty bunch flashed som6 real
floor work In 'the two games
played on the Corral floor Mon-
day and Tuesday.
Nine Letter Men
Report For First
Track Workouts
Referee: Medley.
Second Game.
The Tigers never seriously threat-
ened the Cowboys at any time during
the second game and it was easy go-
ing for tho locals most of the way.
The -visitors led tho scoring by a
flold goal parly In the game but the
Cowboys were soon well in tho lead
by scoring 11 points in rapid succes-
sion. The Cowboys lead 20 to 11 at
the half.
Gregg Flashes Good Form.
Gregg and Fitzgerald were out-
standing stars for Simmons. Gregg
though carefully watched and well
covered by tho defensive workers for
tho Bengals flashed some real old-
time form to break looso on several
occasions and manage for crip shots
when he seemed to bo hopelessly cov-
ered. Binnion and Elms both forwards
were outstanding stars for Trinity.
Elms split the scoring honors with
Fitzgerald for the locals each ring-
ing up 9 points.
At tho initial track workout Tues-
day afternoon with nine letter men
and a host of new material out pros-
pects were good for a winning team
according to Jlead Coach Frank
.Bridges.
Firpo Marshall Melvln Davis Leon-
ard Lynch and Pliny Armour aro the
only members of last years champion
ship team that will not find their
place on the cinder path this season.
The loss of these men in weight
events will moko tho weights team
much weaker but there is much good
material on hand for other events.
Tommy McColIum three-letter man
who runs tho half-mile and 100-yard
dash and docs the broad jump will
captain this year's team. Bounds
Walter Ribble Aldrldgc Fry Daven
port and Gregg are other letter men
who will again strive for their places
on the team. Hines Sims pole vaultcr
and high hurdler is also expected to
be here again when the Spring term
opens.
Simmons has a heavy track sched
ule this season making two trips.
Tho schedule is as follows: April 7
quadrangular meet with Sam Hous
ton Normal McMurry and A. C. C;
April 14 T. C. U. McMurry and A.
C. C; April 21 Texas Tech at Lub
bock; April 28 Great Plains meet at
Canyon and May 11-12 tho Texas
Conference meet which will be held
on Parramore Field.
Bunk -House Bunk
By John D. Harvey
Well as basketball season is over
I guess the sport scribes from tho
various schools in the conference will
get their pens to working and select
an all-confercnco cago squad. It looks
like our best shot to place a man on
the first squad is Johnny Gregg. True
Johnny hasn't played the same bril-
liant brand of ball ho did last year
when he was unanimously chosen for-
ward on tho mythical squad but show
us a better man In tho conference this
year than he.
Gregg was slow rounding into form
but once started was the main stay
of the Cowboy squad and his phonom-
inal floor work has carried the ball
into striking distance of the enemies
goal throughout the entire season.
Johnny was not tho individual 'scor-
ing star of each gamo played this
season but he was generally conceded
to be tho all-Tound star of most every
game he played in. If a better all-
round man than Johnny Gregg was in
the conference this season he wasn't
in uniform.
Another likely candidate for the
first team is Captain Tommy McCol-
Ium. This is Tommy's fourth year on
the squad and a better running guard
has not been seen In the conference
this season according to our notions.
In some departments Tommy Is a
better man than he was last season
when he was an All-Conference man.
We don't sco why ho shouldn't land
a berth on tho first squad and as a
suggestion ho might bo placed ns
captain of that squad.
To some it may not seem as though
we havo had a very successful sea-
son in basketball but summing it all
up tho cage squad has experienced a
good season. With a new coach now
system of playing and practically a
new team wo havo won twelvo and
lost ten games and we have played
some of tho strongest teams in Texas.
Taking all of this Into consideration
why haven't we had a successful
season ?
I have read quite a bit of sarcastic
and some almost dirty digs from other
schools criticizing Simmons' attitude
toward seeking larger games. Most
of these have been from smaller in-
stitutions and don't mean so much in
tho oyes of tho public. Nevertheless
they are hard to keep from resenting
But such popularity must be deserved
so wo must overlook such things from
our smaller friends.
Too bad our neighboring school
Trinity didn't havo their new gym-
nasium completed in time for this
season just finished for with practice
they would have had ono of the best
teams in the conference. Wo always
like to play Trinity for they aro one
of our friendliest rivals and we are
always assured of a clean deal when
in contact with them. Look out for
Trinity next season because they
have plenty of good material.
c
With the passing of basket ball ail
eyes are turned to spring football
training and track work. Something
like fifty men havo reported for foot-
ball and about tho same number for
track. It Ioks like a good season for
Simmons in track and tho support of
all Is hoped for.

Tennis Team Face
A Heavy Schedule
Trospects for a winning tennis
team for Simmons for the present
season are exceedingly bright. Sim-
mons has won the Teras Conference
tennis championship for the past two
years and all of the letter men from
last year are back again.
Raymond Deberry conference cham-
pion in singles last year is captain
of tho team. Ho also won the doubles
last year playing with Earl Ingcrson.
Other available tennis material are:
W. C. Scott C. W. Corley Buster
Wheofer Clifford Solomon Zollie
Stcakley Elgin Nix James Mart'n
and Buster Stacy.
The schedule thus far arranged is
as follows: Texas Tech at Lubbock
April 23; Texas Tech In Abilene May
10; EI Paso School of Mines In Abi-
lene April 30 and two meets with
Texas University and T. C. U. each
dates undecided.

MANY STUDENTS ATTEND
B. Y. P. U. TRAINING SCHOOL
Up until last Thursday there were
enrolled 259 students in tho annual
B. Y. P. U. training school at tho
First Baptist Church and it was ex-
pected that by Friday night the en-
rollment will exceed tho 300 mark.
Eleven different classes aro taught
along various lines of religious educa-
tion. The entire group is divided into
two classes the senior and the junior
departments. This makes it possible
for both young and old to attend.
Tho church is very much pleased
with the enthusiasm shown by the
students. This is the largest enroll
ment that has ever been recorded in a
