Santa Fe Starts
Construction of
New Railroad
Santa Fe Railway began con-
struction on March 24, the
effective date of an ICC order,
on a new 30-mile railroad into
Culberson County of West Tex.
as, John S. Reed, president,
of Chicago, has announced.
The new track will connect
with Santa Fe’s existing line
at the Delaware River in Eddy
County, N, M., and then run
almost due south to Rustler
Springs in Culberson County,
to serve the new multi-million
dollar Duval Corporation sul-
phur plant there, Reed said.
The line, scheduled for com-
pletion July 1, is expected to
cost $3.5 million, he added. A
contract for grading and bridge
work was awarded to H. B.
Zachry Co. of San Antonio, the
low bidder.
Upon line completion this
summer, Santa Fe and Duval
will initiate one of the longest
operations by unit train in the
world. They plan to ship molten
sulphur in 66 tank cars each
having a capacity of 13,000 gal-
lons from the Rustler Springs
plant to the port at Galveston, a
distance of 930 miles on a
continuous turn-around sched-
ule. The train will routed via
Carlsbad and Clovis, N. M.,
thence across Texas to Galves-
ton.
The venture was jointly an-
nounced by Duval and Santa Fe
last November. Santa Fe’s ap-
plication with the Interstate
Commerce Commission for au-
thority to construct the new
line was approved.
During construction, Zachry
forces will handle only the
preparation of the new road-
bed. This will consist of mov-
ing 1.4 million cubic yards of
earth and rock; construction
of 13 bridge structures and 57
pipe or drainage structures.
Drainage pipe on the project Is
expected to vary in size from
as small as three feet to as
large as 12 feet in diameter.
Santa Fe’s own rail-laying
and construction gangs com-
prising more than 100 men will
handle the track construction,
including the laying of 131-
pound welded rails. Overall re-
sponsibility for the construc-
tion work rests with W0 H.
Clark of Amarillo, chief engi-
neer for the Santa Fe’s West-
ern Lines. In preparation for
the work, Clark has establish-
ed field construction offices at
Carlsbad, headed by Foy L0
Stroud, construction engineer,
where he has 15 engineering
department employes under his
jurisdiction.
Invitations were sent out t©
24 construction firms by the
Railway Company to bid on the
job. Some of these firms were
located as far east as Ken-
tucky, others as far west as
Southern California.
