Record cl Yellow Fever.
Yellow fever has always been re-
garded as rn American plague, its
earliest and greatest ravages being in ;
the West. Indies anil in American |
perts. In 1804 and 1814, however, it
was very violent at Gibraltar, and dttr- j
ng the next quarter of a century there |
were a number of virulent outbreaks j
n various Spanish cities. Norfolk
tnd Portsmouth, Va.. were ravaged in
1855; Wilmington, N. C., in 1862, and
lavannab, Ga.. in 1876. Between 1817
tnd 1868 there were six periods of
-•coerce in New Orleans, the mortality
in each case averaging about 3,500.
.In 1878-79 Memphis was almost depup-
tlated, there being 5.160 deaths in
878 and 485 in 1873, though the larg-
r part of the population bad fled from

In an editorial on iii« havoc f
lightning the £, ring;:eld Ite, i> kca
j gives the following observation v.hit-
may be of service to all:
“If you near of a death from Iljrl.• j

ing, and full of dampness, usually i:

Noble Example.
A little touch of noble life, like this
described by the New York Comrccr- 1
cial, ought to have a wide influence;
‘‘A story is told by Robert Ogden
about a friend of his, not long dead, ;
who hold securities in a certain rail-
road. Being told, and from a source
to leave no doubts, that the road was
about to collapse, ho refused to sell,
not wishing to shift the loss upon a
purchaser. He had no large amount
of money, but he was rich in some-
thing better. With all the venal trick- 1
ery that is being exposed, it is refresh-
ing to believe that men like this exist
in America in larger numbers to-day
than they did five, a dozen or tweetj
years ago.”
