Johnny Not Such a Fool.
“When I have occasion to punish
my son,” said the austere man, "1
always tell him that it hurts me more
than it does him.” “I don’t,” replied
the plain, practical citizen; “Johnny
may he a little headstrong and disobe
dient, but he has too much sense to
believe anything like that.”-—Washing
ton Star.
Ideas on Verse.
“Don't he afraid of making me angry
by telling me your candid opinion ol
my verse, old fellow. Criticism
doesn't make any difference with me."
“I know that, my dear boy; hut the
trouble is that it don't make any dif-
ference with your verses, either ”—
New Orleans Times Democrat.
Happiness.
Quit trying to be happy. Happi
ness is a chimera, a vain ami idle con
ceit, a fantastic solecism. The best
plan ts to set for yourself a certain
standard of misery and learn to grin
and hear it. Then, whatever comes
above that standard will be happi-

HAD HIS EXCUSE PAT.
Small Boy Remembered His Father’s
Explanation.
Jackson is a small boy of some 8 or
9 years of age, whose father is very
anxious to make a scholar of him.
Jackson’s tastes do not seem to run
In the same channel, and, consequent-
ly, when the monthly report is sent
home, his average Is usually in the
70s, with conduct marked very poor.
Finding that counter-irritation did not
produce the desired result, his father
made game of him in every conceiv-
able manner, telling him that he
would ne.er amount to anything if tie
did not Jo hotter work. His remarks
on these occasions became so offen-
sive to the child who was rather sen-
sitive and did not relish the idea of
being ridiculed in the presence of
his brother ai;d sister, that he said to
his father the last time he brought
home a report:
“Father, why do you talk to me like
| this and make so much fun of me?”
His father replied: “Jackson, if I
| did not know you were capable of do-
! ing better work, or if I thought you
j were dumb, I would never say a cross
| word to you about your marks.”
l^ast week Jackson handed in a re-
port with the usual low average, and
before pater familias could start in on
the usual language, spoke up very
quickly and said;
“Father, I'm dumb!”—Boston Bust.
Married Men Understand.
In a murder trial in Lancaster, Mo.,
State Attorney Smoot asked a woman
witness some questions about her do-
mestic affairs. The witness resented
the asking of such a question, sajitig,
“I reckon a woman lias a right to
boss her own house.” Mr. Smoot ask-
ed wliat she meant by that, where-
upon Judge Shelton interposed: "The
remark made by the witness is per-
fectly clear, and I am confident the
jury understands what she means.
They are all marrrled men.”
Profit From Lavatories.
The public works committee of Birm-
ingham. England, in submitting to the
eity council a proposition for the eon
Ktruction of nn additional underground
lavatory, etc., announced that where
small charges are made there are
profit possiblities in conveniences ot
this kind. The committee said that
the four underground lavatories, etc.,
were paying the city a net profit of
$2,433 a year.
Horst of all Experiences.
Can anything he worse than to feel that
every minute will be your last? Such was
the experience of Mrs S H Newson. Decat-
ur, Ala “For three years’’ she writes,
"I inilured insufferable pain from indigest-
ion, stomach and bowel trouble Death
seemed inevitable when doctors and all
remedies failed At length I was induced
to try Electric bitters and the result was
miraculous I improved at once and now
I’m completely recovered" For Liver.

Is This True?
When a woman asks a number of
questions she is possessed-of idle curi-
osity. When a man asks a number he
is animated by a keen desire to im-
prove his mind and enlarge his sphere
of knowledge. This is just another of
the little differences between the sexes
which ought to show a woman the ut-
ter Impossibility of ever hoping to at-
tain equality with man.
French Debt Wiped Out by Republic.
France, 1643. began to incur her
debt, chiefly through the wars of Louis
XIV and the lavish expenditure in
building Versailles. In the later years
of I-ouls XVI this amounted to JL468,-
000,000. only to be repudiated on the
establishment of the republic, when
some creditors received thirty-three
per cent, and others nothing.

During Civil War—
Veteran Grateful.
Dr. Miles’ Heart Cure
Effected Cure.
Heart disease is curable, but in people of
advanced age it does not readily lend itself
to ordinary treatment. There is, however,
hope for all sufferers in Dr. Miles’ Heart
Cure, which we know from watching hun-
dreds of cases and from theiettersof grateful
sufferers, will cure where all else has failed.
It is not only a wonderful cure for weak and
diseased hearts, but it is a blood tonic, a reg-
ulator of the heart's action and the most
effective treatment ever formulated for im-
proving the circulation of the blood.
"During the Civil war I contracted heart
disease, and in t8r>6. while living in the grand
old town of Lexington, Va., 1 grew so much
worse, I left there with my wife to visit my
sister-in-law, Mrs. T. A. Kirby, at Roanoke,
Va. While I said nothing to anyone 1 never
expected to live to return to the dear old
town. On reaching Mrs. Kirby's she insisted
I should try Dr. Miles’ Heart Cure. I pro-
cured a few bottles of it, al o the Nervine
and Tonic. After using one or two bottles, I
could see no improvement, and I despaired
of ever being better, but my faithful wife in-
sisted on keeping it up, which 1 did. Im-
provement soon began in earnest an l I took
in all fifteen or sixteen bottles. I was re-
stored to perfect health and while I am 70
years old, I am comparatively a hoy. You
, sir, are a benefactor, and I cheerfully recom-
mend Dr. Miles’ Heart Cure to suffering
