Portland, Ore , Oct.24.—A die-
paton to the Oregonian from
Vancouver naya:
Th» Canadian Paoifio Railway
Company ’■ oraok liner "Emprees
of China" oank last night along*
aide her dook in thin port. Her
sea oooka moot have been opened
but oow, no one aeema able to
aaoertain.
Her main deok on the port aide
ia awash with eeveral feet cf
water. She aank and keeled over
on her port aide ao that the main
deok ia now at un angle of about
45 degrees. Her engines and dy *
uamos are under water. She is
resting on a mud bottom; but the
problem of saving her will be thai
of righting the veasel and pre-
venting her from turning turtle.
Just after 6 o’olook tbe ate warn
noticed that that the wntrr waa
ooming in over the lower deok •
All day the liner had been load*
ing five or six hundreds of tona of
wheat, whioh was being slowly
stowed into the port hold. In-
stantly the steward gave the
alarm the officers at dinner hur-
ried to their stations. All hands
manned the pumps but it was too
late, and every person went
ashore. By the last report htr
stern was resting on tha bottom
of the harbor. The steamer is
valued at a million dollars,
She was booked to sail next
Thursday for the Orient and
would have oarried the British
mails for Hong Kong for whioh
the liner receives a large subsidy
from the imperial government.
Dallas, Tex., Oot. 24.—Gov.
Thomas M. Campbell made the
following statement to a repre-
sentative of The News in Dallas
last night just pnor to bis depart-
ure for Austin:
"The apparent financial strin-
gency in the East will not, in my
opinion, be reflected in Texas
business affairs to any peroeptl-
bla da.ree.
"The present known oo.idition
of eur financial institution*,
which are in suoh stable and
substantial shape, and tha wealth
of money now deposited in our
banks, and the present^prosperi-
ty, all give ample stsumnoe that
financial disturbances elsewhere
will not be felt in Texas.
"Our financial and commercial
interests are in the hands of the
most enlightened, conservative
and progressive bualnoa* m n in
all the oountry, and they usually
keep their feet warm and their
heads oooi. Therefore, I appre-
hend no trouble here."
Hon. Thomas B. Love, Com-
missioner of Banking, Inauranoe,
etc., made the following state-
ment last night:
"The statements of the State
banks, numbering about SCO,
made in response to the August
0*11, chow that they hre h. an
unusually good condition. They
had S3 1*8 per oent more cash on
hand than they had a year ago,
and this notwithstanding the usu-
al drain upon the banks oooa-
sioned by the inoreased holdings
of cotton over former years.
"There ie absolutely nothing in
the Texas banking situation, ao

cods’ livers, but without oil or
grease to upstt the stomaoh and
retard its work.
Unlike old-fashioned ood liver
oil and emulsions, it ia delioioua-
ly palatable, agreeable to the
weakest etomaoh, therefore, un-
equalled as a strength oreator
