Cowboy Logic
(A Student Forum on Matters That Affect Us All)
A law has been proposed in the Texas legislature that would hold parents acdountable for their children's crimes by
monetarily punishing them. Is this legislation justified or will it be unfair to the poor whose children statistics show are
responsible for the majority of the state's juvenile crime cases?

Punishing
the parents will not give them
.the parenting skills necessary to raise
non-delinquent children. More innovative
programs need to he instituted dealing with
parenting skills children and adolescent programs
and family interaction skills. Monetary punishment
will create more problems rather than solve prob
lems. If low income households and welfare
recipients are the main oaes punished the
money will come out of welfare.

It is doubtful that such a law would 7
be very effective in that the poor by
definition would not be capable of
providing much restitution. Prevention
would be a much better way to go-
Requiring classes for improving
parenting skills job education and
developing incentives for both youth and
parents.
