Default The Fallout
Nickelback lead singer tries producing
I hope I become famous and have a song
that gets repeated on the radio 80 kajillion
times a day. That way I can become produc-
er of a band that nearly sounds identical to
myself. This form of self gratification comes
in the form of Default a Vancouver band
whose first release Tlie Fallout was pro-
duced by Nickelback lead
singer Chad Krouger. Default's
first major label relief comes off
to this listener's ears like
Nickelback's own Silver Side
Up. It's fairly decent but I've
heard it all before.
First the upside; this is a
very talented group of guys
The vocals of Dallas Smith
come off as cliched yet there is
an intense sense of drama to his stylings.
This makes it both very comfortable yet
adventurous for the listener. As well the gui
tars of James Hora and Dave Benedict have
the power to kick out amazing riffs when
desired. The drums of Danny Craig are thun-
derous yet subtle when needed.
The downside; all of this excellent poten-
tial is wasted on one good track that being
radio staple "Wasting My Time." This is a
powerful monster of a ballad; it's incredibly
infectious yet doesn't get old. This doesn't
bode well for the rest of the
album. A good majority of the
ten remaining tracks seem like
stereo-typical roadblocks
keeping you from the good
tracks like "Live a Lie" and
"Your Side." This is kinda not
surprising due to the fact that
their producer's album felt the
same exact way.
The Fallout shows that
Default has some talent and lots of expecta-
tions. How they peak at those expectations
on the next album depends on who they
decide on to guide them there.

HOObaStank ' Hoobastank
If you look up the word "Hoobastank'
in a dictionary you'd swear it's come out
something like this;
hoobastank - n. 1 . a funny name
that makes the little kid inside
of you giggle. 2. a band that
has the convenienceincon-
venience of having a sound
and look of Incubus. See
Incubus 2.0.
Hoobastank foster the
same origins of Incubus has
an evil twin version of
Brandon Boyd as the lead
singer washboard abs and all and has a
sound similar to Incubus. That's where the
similarities end however and there are a
few subtle differences. One being that
there is a harder edge to proceedings and
the fact that lead singer Doug Robb comes
off as a tad whiny even more so than
Incubus front man Boyd. The second one
being that the band seems a bit well
uncomfortable.
There are a few radio-
friendly tracks such as
"Pieces" and "Crawling in
the Dark" on the disc but
the rest of the songs give off
a feeling that the band wants
to be something more than
just an average one-hit sen-
sitive metal outfit but they
can't figure out what. And
because of this the tracks seem compla-
cent in it's lack of creativity.
We can give the band credit for hav-
ing the ability to kick out the rock with
ease but they might want to try and get on the
same page to tap the potential. JC
