A LETTER FROM
EDWARD PHILLIPS
HONIIAM HOY AT TEXAS CITY
WRITES HOME TO FOLKS
ABOUT THE STORM.
Texus City, Texas, 8-23-1916.
Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Phillips,
Bonhum, Texas.
I received your letter all right, but
on account of the storm it was a lone
time comini;. It certainly was SOME
storm. Old Bonham sure would havi
looked good to me, while I was trying
to outrun the bay Monday night.
The storm started Monday morning
but did not got so bad until Monday
night* Ihili (Phillips) and 1 had stall
ed home from town, but it got so bad
we bad to get out of the dairy wagon
Hnd ride the horses. Wo were afraid
the wind would blow the wagon over,
for it nearly did so several times be-
fore we got out.
We hadn’t ({one very far on the
horses till the water begun to risj
from the bay. We had to turn an I
(ro away from the bay as fast as «<•
could. We rode until ten o’clock that
night before we found a house When
we did get to a house we found three
soldiers there. The people that lived
there were gone. So the five of us
stayed. We hadn’t been there long
before the wind blew the house off
the blocks, also tearing one room
away. Then we went out to the barn,
and hadn’t been there anytime much
before the wind blew it down. So wo
vent back to where the house was,
ai d stayed in it till morning.
Early in the morning we started to
the dairy. We found everything gotm
but the house and barn. The house
had floated about a hundred yards off
and one room was gone. Guy and
some others were in the house. They
bad to knock a hole in the ceiling and
get up in the attic to keep out of th
water.
The water was about five feet deep
out at the dairy, and about four feet
deep in the main part of Texas City.
There was no water from the bay
where Hob and I were; all the water
there was from the rain.
Bob lost over fifty head of cattle,
rut of u hundred or more. Everything
in the house was ruined.
All I had left was what I had on.
I had left my watch in the trunk, but
afterwards found it. I can’t account
for finding it, as the trunk und my
clothing were gone.
Every one of the family living about
half a mile from the dairy was
drowned. Their place is all swept
away, and all that remains of the
house is a few blocks.
Every house in Texas City is ful>
cf soldiers, their tents having been
washed away. Even the churches and
school buildings arc full of soldiers.
1 have beeu feeling a great deal
better since I have been here. I think
I will feel even better if I ever get
anything else to eat. Texas City is
under mai tial law, and you can ob-
tain but one loaf of bread a day.
There is nothing to eat at the res-
taurants except coffee and soup.
Well, I don’t know whether you
would like this country or not. It is
a fine country, but l would like to be
out of reach of the bay water, in
case of another storm.
Lovingly yours,
Ed Phillips.
