SOUTHERN BAPTIST
MAKE RAPID GROWTH
IN PAST 20 YEARS
White Baptists of the South have in
creased more than two and a half times
as rapidly as the population of this sec-
tion during the past twenty years accord-
ing to inormation just compiled hy Dr.
E. P. Alldrcdgc secretary of the depart-
ment of survey statistics and information
of the Baptist Sunday School board. The
Baptist increase in membership since 1900
has been 84.1 per cent while the gain in
population for the South during that time
has been 32 per cent. The gain in annual
contributions to missions and benevolences
during the same period has been nearly 1-
000 per cent. These tabulations are made
up from the annual reports of only those
local churches which co-operate with the
Southern Baptist Convention.
By way of comparison the report shows
that in 1900 Southern Baptists had 737
associations while today there are 925 rep-
resenting a gain of 25.5 per cent; in 1900
there were 18963 local churches which
number has been increased to 25305 a
gain of 33.4 per cent; there were 1604413
bona fide members in 1900 and 2961348
in 1920 a gain of 81.1 per cent; 9711
Sunday Schools twenty cars ago and 17-
868 today an increase of 82.1 per cent;
639944 Sunday School pupils in 1900 ami
1835936 today u guin of 187 per cent.
Annual gifts to missions and benevolences
in 1900 were 8701323.38 while this sum
has increased to $7331226.58 today an
advance in 20 years of 915.3 per cent; to-
tal contributions per year to all purposes
in 1900 were $3069506.52. while b 1920
they had climbed to $21327416 67. an ad-
vance of 591 per cent; uml the value of
local church property in 1900 was $19437-
323 while in 1920 that valuation had
climbed to $74273728 an increase of 282
per cent.
Should Southern Baptists continue at
this rate of growth for the next twenty
cars. Dr. Alldrcdgc finds that they will
by 1910 have 1156 associations 33740
local churches 5451841 members 32206
Sunday Schools 5267186 pupils annual
contributions of $77633723 to missions
and benevolences and $148012474 tq all
purposes and local church property valued
at S2JI3.725.639. Baylor Lariat.

I bave always thought of this acte as
one of labor and in pursuance of this
idea I hereby declare that I have saved
all the labor that I could. Labor was put
on a man as a curse and I never did en-
Joy a cussin'. I have with great success.
Drenched this doctrine especially in the
Math department. Many of the boys in
this department have become so enthusias-
tic in the cause that they economize about
twentv-four hours a day devoting the re-
mainder to manipulating ivory cubes say-
ing "Baby needs a new pair of shoes."
They are carrying my doctrine too far and
I hereby warn them not to let the Bursar
see them as it is said that he is a "Money
Demon." To liberate the race from this
Adamic curse I have invented a machine
that will save me from labor all the rest
of mv life. It utilizes the noise made bv
a crying baby. It makes me sick to think
of the vast motive power going to waste in
this way. The average baby cries nineteen
hours a day some twenty-four. There is
one of the latter near where I live. It
cries like Alexander because there are
only twenty-four hours in a day. My mn
chine utilizes both the noise and breath
of the kid. I wdl not tell how the apui
ratus is made as it is a secret yet suffice
to say that it works what a blessinc mv
invention will be on a cold morning. A"
you have to do will be to light a match
hold it near the grate putt a string
tached to the baby's toe (it makes no dif
ference which one although I use the
large one) and this automatically starts
the baby. He begins yelling and in three
minutes there will be a roaring blaze.
When this is secured the kid can be qui-
eted by switching the apparatus to the era
die. The applications of my invention are
unlimited. I will mention but a few. It
will churn your milk in two minutes and
make it into chees&'irt ten minutes. With
my invention two babies can run a reaper
and five a street car. (Patents applied for
