Lead Attack As
S.U. Beats Tech
Cowhands Rope Matadors In
Second Half; Smith
Leads Stall
It was tho team work of tho Mc
Collum brothers that again spelled
defeat for tho Texas Tech Matadors
at Lubbock last Friday night.
Gcno and Gob simply could not
miss and their combination alone
accounted for 23 of tho 42 poInU
scored by tho Ranchers to 30 for tho
Tech cagcrs.
' The game was a nip and tuck af-
fair during tho entire first half with
tho Matadors fighting hard but con-
siderably outclassed due to the added
good work of Nccly and Seed.
Although Uncle Joo Smith did not do
any of the scoring himself he was
Indirectly responsible for many of tho
counters by taking qhargo of tho de-
layed atlck.
Early in tho second half the Cow-
hands broko loose and tho Tech five
became desperate attempted to
change their defenso and began to
shoot wildly. Hodges Tech captain
was nosed out in scoring honors for
Tech by tho lanky Fisher who plays
center. He' scored seven points to six
for Hodges'.

A rally commemorating the silver
anniversary of the organization of
the Women's Missionary Union in the
Sweetwater Baptist association was
held Thursday night at the university
auditorium with; Mrs. A. T. Douglas
chairman of the observance presid-
ing. The program was planned as a tri-
bute to women who assisted in the
organization of tho Sweetwater Union
and also for the purpose of stimulat-
ing interest in a movement on the
part of the W. M. U to raise f 25000
as a silver anniversary gift to Sim-
mons University. Mrs. Douglass an-
nounced that approximately ? 1200
has been contributed to the fund and
expressed appreciation for the amount
received. No contribution was taken
at tho rally.
Dr. J. D. Sandefer welcomed the
womon and their guests to tho uni-
versity and Mrs Gentry Holmes
chairman of education in district 17
Sweetwater W. M. U. gave tho re-
sponse. Dr. O H. Cooper head of tho edu-
cation department was the chief

With four straight conference wins
it looks llko Crnnflll's Cowhands
might be off for another conference
basketball championship this season.
They managed to get the Pirates
out of the way for the time being by
Winning with a two point advantage.
The game was. fast and furious and
a thriller from beginning to end.
The boys failed to go ovef so big
with the T. I. A. A. competition this
week when they ran into tho Canyon
Buffs. The Buffs always have a good
basketball team and is rarely beaten
by a Texas Conference representa-
tive. Tech was hardly so tough even on
their own court and the Ranchers left
Lubbock with a real nico victory tuck-
ed under their belt. Hodges was not
tho threat ho usually is and Fisher
took the scoring honors for Tccht
Fisher is a dead shot and once he gets
a throw he seldom misses.
Monday night the Ranchers will
meet their old traditional foes the
Howard Payne Yellow Jackets in the
Cowboy Corral. The Jackets arc next
to the top in conference standing and
the game promises to be a real thrill-
er... It took a little extra time for tho
Jackets to whip the Trinity Tigers
who tile Cowboys defeated by a pretty
nice margin. They fared better with
the Kangaroos and ran up a 33 to 17
win.
Tho fact that Cloningcr was elect-
ed football captain of tho Jackets for
the '31 season was noted with inter-
est A great deal of praise was given
to Cheancy and Kcaton Howard
Payne coaches who have successfully
led the team through three consecu-
tive football championships. The
Jackets will loso soven men by grad-
uation but nevertheless arc entertain-
ing high hopes of another successful
season.
Shotwell will remain at Brecken-
ridge for another year and therefore
the chances of tho Breck team is
again looking rosy as far as Breck
is concerned. A great many of the
old timers remember "Shot" because
he was head conch at Simmons sev
eral seasons back.
And now for a real sport story for
tho ladies. It seems that Rudy Vallce
got a little free publicity when some-
one attempted to lay him low with an
over ripo grnpo fruit in a theater
concert tho other night in New York
Tho fruit hurler missed his mark
completely and Rudy just kept right
on moaning. Some of tho boys havo
said that they believe they could have
met with better luck should they havo
had the privilego of hurling the fruit.
Nevertheless Rudy acted the sport
and possibly won a few male converts
and beyond a doubt caused the femin-
ine heart lo increase Us beats.

Battle Due Here
. Monday Evening
Old Enemies Promise Fun
And Excitement For
Spectators
Monday night in tho Cowboy Corral
the Simmons basketball team will
fight it out with their ancient enemy
tho Howard Payno Yellow Jackets.
As the conference now stands tho
Ranchers arc leading and the Jackets
aro next in line with a .750 per cent
standing.
Tho Yellow Jackets lost In an early
conference game to the Southwestern
Pirates by a rather ono sided score.
They havo fared better with some of
their later conference opposition
howover. They defeated the Trinity
Tigers by one point and an extra
playing timo wasrequlred to win. The
Bcoro of this contest was 31 to 30.
They barely escaped with a victory
over tho St. Edward's Saints with a
29 to 30 win. In tho gamo with the
Austin College Kangaroos tho Jack
ets evidently hit their stride for thoy
won tho game 83 fo 17.
Tho Cowboys record is somewhat
better for thoy have won every con
ference game. Their hardest game
was with tho Pirates whom tho Cow
hands defeated by a two point mar
gin.

Cowhands Capture
Fourth Conference-
Victory In Sherman
Austin C. Loses To Ranchers
By 37 to 23 In Final
Game of Tour
Continuing their conference wins
the Cowhands captured the fourth
straight victory by defeating Austin
College by the score of 37 to 23 nt
Sherman Tuesday night.
Freshman Jim Nccly enrried off
scoring honors for Simmons with 12
points.
This was tho lost of four gnmc3
played on their foreign invasion that
carried the Ranchers something like
a thousand miles In Tcxns territory.
Tho gamo was fast and full of
thrills despite tho fact that the Cow
boys held an eleven point lead at the
closo of the first half. Tho high
spot came in the second half how-
ovcr when the Kangaroos cut tho
lead down to five points. Austin
scored ten points in the first half.
Connelly was the ace for the Kanga-
roos and divided scoring honors with
Nccly.

Champs Of Old Time Rough
And Tumble Basketball Style
Slowly changing appearance from
basketball games to grammar school
football rushes "Potts" Anderson's
wrecking crew baskctccrs have swung
Into tho third week of their campaign
for tho championship.
Some tough wrestling tripping and
blocking matches havo been seen on
the floor and many of the battles
have ended with from one to two
of tho players on the cripple list. It
is nothing at all to see the mob under
tho goal clear away and find a stiff
and quiet body stretched out in a
semi-conscious condition.
Tho closo scores indicate why such
battles aro being waged by both sides.
It has also become an established fact
that it is better to foul a man than
to let him shoot( i good shot for he
might miss tho one or two free shots.
Several of he games 'have ended with
only ono point declaring the winner.
One gnmo went three extra time pe-
riods before the victory could be de-
cided. Few changes have been noticed In
tho standing. The Butchers broko
their perfect record and won .two
games. They now stand with four
losses and two' wins. Big Scroggins

An unexpected upset broke the win-
ning streak of the Cowboys Saturday
night when Snd Sam Burton's West
Texas Buffaloes went off with tho big
end of a scoro of 38 to 17. The bril-
liant passing attack of the Buffs was
too much for the Simmons men and
so closely wero they guarded that
they wero allowed only two field goals
in the last half.
Tho gamo started slowly and once
in the first period the Cowboys wero
leading 5 to 4. However their lead
was shortlived as tho scoring com-
bination of Fortenberry and Comer
began clicking. Fortenberry- six

was high point man with 14 j Comer a
lanky forwprd was second with 12.

10 Points Each
By defeating the Trinity University
Tigers the Simmons Cowboys won
their third consecutive Texas Con-
ference victory nt Waxahachio Mon-
day night by a score of 4 to 21.
Considering the fact that the
Ranchers had traveled many miles
and had had a considerable letdown
against tho Canyon Buffs a T.I.A.A.
quintet the locals come through in
fine stylo in winning by such a de-
cisive score.
Captain Bob McCollum was in the
game for only a short timo but the
ranchers looked much better while ho
was directing the fray. 'While he was
out the gamo looked somewhat rag-
ged as far as tho Simmons team was
concerned. Individual scoring went
on however nnd Gene McCollum
Hucstis and Neely amassed ten
points each. Hill and Payno were
the high point men for tho Tigers
with seven points each. Trinity played
without tho services of Hobbs who is
usually their high scorer.
