APPRECIATIVE
I have purchased the Devil's Hiver
News from Steve Murphy and have
moved my equipment, consisting of
a Linotype machine, electrically driv
rn job pre««e* and other necessaiy
equipment and stock from Big Lake
where I formerly owned and pub-
lished the Big Lake News.
1 came to Sonora by choice us 1
decided it is a good place in which
to live. I like the livestock industry
Mud the class of people who are con-
nected with the industry. 1 find the
business men here to be very pro-
gressive Mild courteous as well as
dependable.
My every intention as publisher of
the Devil' Hiver News is to pro-
mote the interest of the local bus-
'll"-, men and the ranchmen as well
as the resources of the county. If
the business men give their unstint-
ed support in the future as they have
this week, we will he more able to
give Sonora arid Sutton County the
i kind of paper that will be a credit
to a town even much larger than
Sonora.
My ambition is to make Sutton
County as good a citizen as Ste e
has, and to be instrumental in bring-
ing about many improvements in this
town and county. Let’s all work to-
gether for tbs good of the town and
country.
Respectfully,
Mark A. Wilson
“HF.I.UP WANTED!
I have accepted the position as ed
itor and business manager of the Dev-
il’s Kiver News of Sonora and pro-
pose to devote all my time to the
interest of this publication and the.
Sonora Chamber of Commerce.
To succedd in helping to make the
Devil’s Hiver News a paper worthy
of this town and county, 1 must have
the co-operation and aid of the peo-
ple here. If you know anything of
interest, especially livestock news, 1
will greatly appreciate the informa-
tion. If you have some one visiting
you or know of any one visiting here
or awuy you will have helped to make
the Devil’s Hiver News a more inter
esting paper by telling some one con-
nected with the News about it.
I will personally appreciate any
advertising business that you might
give me for the News, or any job j
work that you might need as well ’
as any subscriptions.
Respectfully,
H. V. Stokes.
EDUCATION IS EXPENSIVE
A while back a salesman appealed
in our town with a wonderful aitie'e
for sale and after demonstrating to'
almost every woman in Sonora he;
was able to unload about $200 worth
of it. This particular merchandise
was a very pretty varnish and furni-
ture polish.
About a week after the salesman
left town, it was discovered to the
dismay of the purchasers that the
pretty shiny spots on the furniture
where he hud demonstrated his polish
failed to shine and that the original
varnish had turned to a white chalky
coating. Luckily very few of the
purchasers had used tl is concoction
sold us a varnish, consequently, very
little damage was done
Several merchants in Srnora sell
varnish and furniture dressing polish
and each of these merchants pay taxes
to help upkeep the city and county
government and school systems. And
these merchants are responsible and
back up their goods. It would be a
keen delight, indeed, to be able to
take this merchandise or any other
meichandise back to them and have
them make it right, but this slick
salesman who comes in and takes or-J
ders from house to house forgot to ]
leave his address.
What Sonora needs is rent hous-
es. It is practically impossible for a
family to get a house in which to
live here.
Sonora has some of the most :;ub
stantial business people to be found]
anywhere—if only their bu|inesses
were housed in as substantial houses
Chevrolet Deliveries
Show Big Increase
A tremendous increase in retail de-
liveries of new Chevrolet automobiles ]
throughout the country during the
first two months of 1927 as compared
with the same period of 1926 is
shown in the following report com-
piled by the Chevrolet Motor Com-
pany.
The magnitude of this increase is
indicated in reports from thirty-two
of the most important trading areas
in the United States and shows an
average increase of 97.4 per cent in
these centers for the first two months
of 1927 as compared with 1926.
The increase is striking evidence
of the country-wide and constantly
mounting demand for the Chevrolet
Motor Company to reach a new high
peak of production during February
of this year of 86,821 cars—and still
further marking the company's pre-
eminence as the world’s largest man-
ufacturers of gear shift automobiles.!
State Highway
to Wage War on
Many Cocklebura
H. L. Taylor, superintendent of
maintenance for the State Highway
Commission over the roads in this
county, announces to the ranchmen
here that he is clearing all Sutton
County Highways of the cocklebur
and would like for the ranchmen to
assist him by clearing their pastures
of this well known pest, especially
in their pastures along the highways.
Every sheep man knows the detri-
ment of the cockleburr, and should
make an effort in self defense, at
least, to free his range of this burr.
A little co-operation at this time with
Mr. Taylor would make it likely that
these burrs could be destroyed, and
with a little diligent follow-up work
in this line, the country could prob-
ably be freed from the pest
