JV Baseball Team Splits Two Games
Kermit JV baseball team
defeated Ector 9-4Saturday to
run their season record to 5-3.
The Kermit JV got a fine
pitching effort from Wade Cox
(2-1) for five innings, when he
injured a shoulder. He gave up
three hits and no earned runs,
and was relieved by Benjy
Unger, who finished the sixth
and seventh innings. Unger
allowed no hits in his stint on
the mound.
Kermit fell behind, 4-0, in
the second on errors and
mental mistakes, plus one base
hit. They closed to 4-2 in the
fourth and went ahead 6-4 in
the sixth. Kermit tallied three
more runs in the seventh to put

Cox contributed a couple of
hits, as did Ronnie Woods and
Kenny Hix, who had a single
and double each. L. D. Green
boomed a two-run triple and
others getting in the hit
column were Unger, Terry Hill
and Mike Smith.
Don Owens, centerfielder,
was lost to the team for two
weeks when he fractured a
collarbone Friday night and
reinjured it Saturday.
Coach Mike Garrison said
the layoff hurt the team, with
no game played in a week. He
added that the squad was slow
mentally and physically until
the fourth inning, but then
they came on strong and
played well once they got
going.
In a game played Tuesday,
the Pecos JV took a 6-1
decision. Losing pitcher was
Unger (2-1), who gave up eight
hits.
Kermit collected six hits,
but Garrison said the team
could not get anything moving.
He added that it seemed
everything his team did was
wrong.
Cox and Unger collected
two hits apiece and Green and
Hill each hit safely once.
Next action for the junior
varsity will be Tuesday, April
4, when they journey to
Monahans. Game time is 4:30
p.m.

Pheasants
Thrive In
Panhandle
AUSTIN — Texas is not
known as a major
pheasant-producer, but a
modest colony of the colorful
game is thriving in the
Panhandle.
And so far, this spring has
all the earmarks of a good
production season for. the
birds, according to the Texas
Parks and Wildlife Department.
Mild weather, a good
standing crop of holdover birds
and an expected good wheat
crop all should combine to
produce, enough birds for a
good hunting season next fall.
As usual, cover is the vital j
factor for the birds in the
Panhandle flatlands where
most of the available acreage is
plowed for agricultural
production.
Department wildlife
specialists recommend that
landowners leave as much
weedy cover as possible for the
birds during the nesting season.
A variety of trees, shrubs
and other plants are used by
pheasants for food and cover.
Some of the more popular
cover are Russian olive, red
juniper, fruit trees, wild plum
and multiflora rose.
A successful nine-day season
was held during December in
most counties of the Panhandle
Regulatory District, with a
daily bag limit of two cocks
and possession limit of four.
The Chinese ringneck was
brought to this country from
Asia, and it has spread across a
vast area of North America.
Texas biologists hope the bird
will contine to thrive and
expand its range in the state.

THAT’S A LONG MILE — Gary Preston made a fine
showing as he took the third place spot in the mile run with a
time of 4:48.7. Preston started slow, but really put the finish on
when he passed two other contenders to move into the third
place slot and held his pace well in the last lap of the event.
