the afternoon. Miss Mary Fos-, Mrs. W. A. Jackson at Hail Sun-
ter gave a reading, titled “Bank-
rupt.” The gifts were found by
Mrs. Reid through a playet given
by Misses Ruby and Elizabeth
Davis and Kvle Atkin McFerrin,
titled “The Ship of Hearts.” Mrs.
Reid received many beautiful
gifts.
Ice cream asd cake were serv-
ed to 33 guests'.
Sunday School Class Picnic.
Last Friday night Miss Carrie
Cummings carried her Baptist
Sunday School class on a picnic
in Sam Mller’s pasture. Chicken
and bacon was carried and cooked
picnic style and lots of other
good things to eat were enjoyed
by the 14 guests.
News has been received here
from W. A. Scoggins', who lives
in the lower Rio Grande Valley at
La Ferria, telling of the destruc-
tion of the tropical storm which
came there last week. Besides all
crops, including the citrus crop,
being destroyed, he said practi-
cally fvery house that was not
destroyed was damaged. His
house was one of the few which
escaped damage. He said the
storm raged for 20 hours and
during that time they expected
every minute for their house to
crush in, but it withstood the fui>
of the storm.
Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Thomas
entertained the 42 Club at their
home Friday night. Beside the
regular members, Mr. and Mrs.
Culbert James and Miss Louise
Roderick and Ralph Merrill were
j visitors. A refreshment plate of
chili and beans, rye bread and
y pie was served to twenty-four.
The Mprry Matrons Club met
at the home of Mrs. Gerge Tayar
Wednesday afternoon. Nine mem-
bers' were present at this meet-
ing.

Etta Adams were in Paris Satur-

Mrs. Gladys' Blue returned home
Sunday. She has been in Dallas
with her brother who has under-
gone an operation. We are glad
to say he is doing nicely and
i has left the hospital.
The farmers have been busy
gathering their cotton during the
past week and have used very lit-
tle “imported” cotton pickers so
far. The cotton yard receipts
here were almost a thousand
bales up to last Saturday night.
Our farmers and business men
are looking forward with much
expectation to the Government
paying the farmers here for the
cotton that has' been plowed up.
But so far the Governmest checks
have not arrived.
