Prepare For Pasture Planting
It is just as important to have
a good, clean, well prepared
seedbed for Bermudagrass as it
for cotton.
This has been the experience

to reach you?

of such Delta Soil Conservation
District cooperators as Toney
Steward, Will Smith, Joe Black-
well, Roscoe Blackwell, Joe Kit-
chen, E. A. Edwards, C. H. Ed-
wards, Hoyt Kennemer, Bussy
Good, Thomas Skinner, R. K.
Hooten, W. O. Wallace, Dale
Stockton and many others that
have had good results from their
Bermudagrass plantings.
These and others have found
that the land should be plowed
thoroughly well in advance of
Bermuda sodding time. Many
types of equipment have been
used in preparing seed beds.
Some methods used are bed-
ding and re-bedding, flatbreak-
ing, disking several times, chisel-
ing and others.
Soil Conservation Service Tech-
nicians have found that any
method that breaks the soil
deep enough to get through any
hard pan, loosen the soil, destroy
competing grass and weeds, and
serve to hold soil moisture, may
be adequate. Of real' importance
is getting the land plowed now
and as near like a seedbed for
cotton as possible.
On old fields or pastures
where “Hurrah” grass or Colo-
rado grass or weeds are likely to
volunteer and crowd out the
new Bermuda plantings, deep
breaking may be very helpful.
If the seed from past crops of
such grasses and weeds are
turned under as deep as five to
seven inches they may never be
able to germinate and come up
through such deep covering.
This will allow Bermudagrass
sprigs to grow off ahead of the
competition.
If land is prepared now, there
should be time to accumulate
good soil moisture between now
and Bermudagrass planting time
in late February and March.
Mr. & Mrs. Johnnie M. Wheat
and daughters, Frances and
Johnette, DeKalb, visited Sun-
day with his mother, Mrs. E. E.
Balentine, Mr. and Mrs. Roger
Gessman and Twonette.
Mr. and Mrs. Grover D. Pick-
ering attended the Henry Man-
cini Concert at Municipal Audi-
torium in Dallas last Thursday
night.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl P. Harri-
son, Mr. and Mrs. Opal Preas,
Mr. and Mrs. David Jones, Jr.
and Don David Chancellor at-
tended a Scottish Rites dinner
at the Holiday Inn in Paris Sat-
urday evening and heard John

The response of numerous fri-
ends who visited me during my
four-week stay in the Janes
Hospital as result of a broken
collar bone, and dozens of other
friends who sent get-well cards
and several who sent gifts, was
an inspiration to me. I had no
idea I had so many friends in
Cooper. It was generous of my
boss, Travis Toney of the Coop-
er Review, to devote his Adlibs
to me in one issue of the paper.
All these have my heartfelt
thanks along with the entire
hospital' staff and my beloved
son-in-law, Dr. Olen G. Janes,
and my grandchildren who vis-
ited me on Christmas Day and
brought gifts.
