Some of us have it and some
of us don't and then there's my
classification. Evidently what-
ever Loren had for this column
he's still got it cause I ain't. I
can see ole Tate now . . . grass
skirt coconut milk octopus pie
swimming in the cool blue wa
ters .wnat eise is mere to swam
in?) and of course the grass skirt
came fully equipped. I can also
see Loren laughing up his sleeve
'cause he got out of writing this.
But I bet the'd like to hear Larry
scream "Where's the Branding
Iron????"
This is Friday they tell me and
ithey don't have to tell me that a
new semester has started. But do
you know what? It started out
just like the other one . . . Classes
chapel dash to the Sub to check
on the mail from home that s not
three classes mad rush to the
Bean (you have to be mad to rush
to the Bean) and then more
classes. It makes me tired just
writing about it! I hear nearly
everyone is in a stage of mass
'confusion. Wrong classes with
wrong teachers at the wrong time
on the wrong day. How wrong
can a person get?.
As I sit back in one of my
classes and procrastinate I dream
of the day that I'll have my home-
work (on time) I'll be making
my grades (passing ones) and I'll
have a brainstorm for this column
I made that remark once when I
should have been quiet. The re-
ply I got was '"Oh you have the
storm now all you need is the
brain." Some people and other
people's children I always say.
Just before going home be-
tween semesters I was talking to
one of the girls who has transfer-
red to another institution of
higher learning. In the course of
the conversation the question
came up' as to just why she was
leaving. She thought for a min
ute then said "Pat do you know
what the mattresses are stuffed
with?" Proudly I said "Sure
the best straw to be found!" My
friend looked up with a dead-
serious expression on her face and
said "I know now where the
straw came from that broke the
camel's back." Nothing against
the beds in the dorm but looks
like it would be. cheaper to fur-
nish inner-springs than it is to
loose patrons.
Say! Did you hear the one
where the psychiatrist said to the
patient: "Now just when did you
first discover you enjoyed' going
to college?" Here's one for you
to think on.
Here's hoping all of you that
go to bed before 1 a. m. have
nightmares ulcers and failing
grades. The ones who don't go
pto bed before 1 already have
them.
Over the holidays Danny and
the Juniors came up with the
top tune in the key city "At The
Hop." Nick Todd has 4he second
selling record of this but it isn't
going in the west as well as
Danny's disk. Nick Todd is the
brother of Pat Boone recording
under the name of Nick Todd. I
had the privilege of watching a
personal appearance of Nick's in
Nashville Tluring the Christmas
holidays and -to say .the least I
wasn't overly impressed with the
style or voice of Nick. However
he has a very good side of "At
The Hop." .
Jerry Lee Lewis has taken over
the rocking piano field with a
fast beat and a style that has
added selling power to some new
songs like "Shake Baby Shake"
and "Great Balls Of Fire" as well
as an old Hank Williams tune
"You Win Again." I haven't seen.
Jerry in a personal appearance
but I have seen the show "Jam-
boree" in which he sang "Great
Balls Of Fire" and on the Steve
Allen Show where he sang both
sides of the record.
One of the top groups in the
nation today is the Crickets. Be-
sides having the top tune in
America 'for a lone while the
same tune "That'll Be The Day"
was the number three tune in
Greafr Britain for several weeks.
They now are coming back strong
with "Oh Boy." Recording on
Brunswick I think they're the
greatest in their field.
Still on the top artist of the
day" in' sales and juke box plays
I'd like to insert a bit about a
group that were very well known
last year for the tune "Shangri-
La." The Four Coins now have
out a waxing that I think should
go to the top of the stack "A
Broken Promise" backed by "Fol
low Your Heart." According to
all figures -these "Shangri-La"
boys should be on the top of the
market in 1958.
A singer that has attained' the
caption of the "Best Voice In
America" is. still near the high
mark with one hit tune after
another. Ary one could guess
we're talking about Johnny
Mathls who in the last few iponths
has had five of the hottest selling
tunes out. Johnny was a student
at San Francisco State College
with an assured future in ath-
letics when he faced the decision
of going (to the 1956 Olympics or
going to New York and becoming
another starter in the singing pro-
fession. "Choosing New York he
started wih "Mr. Wonderful" and
-then went on to record five of the
best. The better of them being
"Chances Are."
