have replaced the carved antiquated tables and chairs used in the library previously.
H-SU Library Has Entirely
New Atmosphere for Students
By MARTHA GAY UECKERT
"... ain't what she used to
be." That is in the library
"there's been some changes
made."
As Mr. or Miss Student climb
the stairs to the Hardin-Simmons
library in the Sandefer Memorial
Building an entirely new atmos-
phere awaits them. A reading
area newly decorated and furnish-
ed with taffey-colored birch fur-
niture is the first thing that will
catch the eye of Mr. or Miss Stu-
dent. To create a home-like air com-
fortable living room-type occas-
ional chairs and settees have been
placed in the library.
Mr. Student will also enjoy
writing his research papers and
routine assignments on the smooth
surface of the new birch tables.
These 15 foot long tables are ar-
ranged to accommodate 24 read-
ers to a section: Around the
tables are counter-high shelves
holding reference books and popu-
lar current magazines.
Individual study tables have
been arranged along the north
wall of each floor for students
doing special assignments and
graduate work. As one student
expressed it "it's more private
than a long table."
Private study rooms for gradu-
ates have also been equipped
with new desks.
"After careful planning and
consideration of the needs of the
library this large expenditure of
furniture was made for the bene-
fit of the faculty and students of
H-SU" Miss Mabel Willoughby
library director said proudly.
Granted the new furniture im-
proves the appearance of the
library and makes it look more
"professional" but probably equ-
ally as important it makes pos-
sible a "more logical arrangement
of books and provides us with
badly needed shelving space"
Miss Willoughby said.
Library books are arranged in
logical sequence according to the
Dewey Decimal system. Books
numbered 400 through 600 are on
the first floor. The 700's through
900's bound and unbound periodi-
cals and the back issues of the
unbound periodicals are on the
second floor.
Current periodicals indexes will
remain at the back of the third
floor.
In order to maintain a good
library books must be properly
