Golfeis Open
In Ft. Worth
A two-year letterman and four
freshmen will form the Hardin-
Simmons University golf team
that opened its 1964 schedule
Thursday in Fort Worth against
Texas Wesleyan College.
The dual match with TWC at
Rockwood Municipal Course will
be the first of a dozen two-way
contests for the Cowboy link-
sters this spring. In addition
the H-SU team will compete in
five medal-play tournaments.
The Thursday match will serve
as a warm-up for the 36-hole
medal-play Southwestern Recrea-
tion meet in Fort Worth Friday
and Saturday at the same course.
Other dual matches will be sched-
uled with TCU Midwestern
Texas Wesleyan McMurry and
Abilene Christian. Other tourna-
ments include the Abilene Inter-
collegiate Invitational Andrews
Intercollegiate Stephen A. Aus-
tin Invitational and the Texas
Independent Colleges meet.
Jay Cole a two-year junior let-
terman from Frederick Okla.
will head the Cowboy team in the
Fort Worth matches this week.
He will be joined by Bill Maupin
of Abilene Van and Dan New-
berry of Hamlin and Gary Gate
of El Dorado Ark. The latter
four are freshmen.
Cole is one of two lettermen
returning this year. The other
Don Seamster of Borger has not
completed the basketball season
and will join the squad later.
Later additions to the Cowboy
links team will include James
McAfee of Abilene Tom Hardy
of Brownfield and Mike Meriney
of Ramsey N. J. McAfee is a
former member of the Odessa
College team which won the na-
tional junior college champion-
ship. Lettermen lost included Larry
Fryer Keith Fry and Pat Dusek.

Winning their ninth straight
the Cowboys wrapped the city
title with a 97-86 victory over
the McMurry Indians last Tues-
day night in Cooper Gym.
In winning their 19th of the
season against six losses the
Cowboys cinched their first un-
disputed city championship. Last
year they were co-champions
with Abilene Christian College
but now haVe a two game lead
with only ACC to play.
McMurry's Preston Vice took
scoring honors for the game with
32 points. But the scoring of the
Indians' Vice was off-set as the
entire starting line-up for the
Pokes hit in double figures. Nate
Madkins Henry Peacock and
Paul Fortin each hit 21 points.
Don Seamster hit 13 and Charles
Dishman added 10.
First Half Was Closo
Tho first half was a see-saw
affair with game tied four times
and the lead changing hands 10
times. The Pokes took the lead
with six minutes left in the half
and moved dut to a 48-39. In the
second period the Pokes came
roaring out and galloped off to
a 21-point lead. With 9:35 left
in the game the Indians began
chopping the lead.
With four minutes left the
Cowboys' lead had dropped to
12 points but the Indians lost
starter Russell Knoll because of
fouls.
The victory gave Coach Lou
Henson's crew their best season
percentage-wise in the school's
history.
Madkins Close io Record
Madkins' 21-point effort moved
to within 23 points of breaking
the school scoring record in one
season. He has one more game
to play ACC Thursday night.
The taller Cowboys controlled

Pokes Down Texans
Chasing down the Tarleton
State Texans the Cowboys cap
tured their eighth straight win
with a 55-51 win in Tarleton last
Saturday night.
Using a semi-stall for the entire
game the Texans stayed in the
game until the final minutes.
The Pokes took a 50-49 lead with
40 seconds left and moved away.
It was the 18th win of the sea-
son in 24 starts for the Cowboys.
The contest finished out the sea-
son for the Rebels and gave them
a poor 3-20 season record.
Madkins Loads Scorers
Nate Madkins the Pokes All-
American candidate paced all
scorers with 17 points. Larry
Aldridge led Texan scorers with
a 15-point performance.
The game was a see-saw affair
with the lead changing hands
throughout the first half. The
score was knotted 25-25 at the
end of the first half. The Texans
opened the second period with a
layup to take a 27-25 edge. Then
they upped their lead to 30-25
with 14:35 remaining.
With starter Henry Peacock
fouling out Coach Lew Henson
pulled Ron Ziegler off the bench.
Playing in his second game of
the season Ziegler quickly hit a
long jumper to tie the score at
42-42.
Paul Fortin hit two free throws
to give the Pokes a brief lead but
the Texans came right back to
tie it again. Then a free throw
put the Texans ahead 45-44.
Seamster Hits Shot
A long shot by Don Seamster
gave the Pokes the lead but Ald-
ridge reversed the lead with two
charity tosses. The teams ex
changed baskets to make the
score Tarleton 49 H-SU 48.
Ziegler then sank a jumper
from the corner to put the Pokes
ahead 50-49 and they never
trailed.
The Texans very conservative
with their shots hit 55.2 per cent
from the floor sinking 16 of 29.
The Cowboys connected on 18 of
37 attempts from the field for
48.6 per cent.
From the free throw line the
Pokes hit 19 of 25 for 76 per cent.
Tarleton sank 19 of 27 for 70.4
per cent.
The Cowboys outrebounded the
Texans 35-22. Peacock collected
12 and Madkins pulled down 10.
The Cowboys meet the Abi-
lene Christian College Wildcats
Thursday in Abilene gym for
their last outing of the season.

Intramural League Ends Play;
Sigma Delta Sigma Leading
The Sigma Delta Gold team
and the Beefs were fighting it out
for the lead as play closed in the
intramural basketball league this
week. As of last Tuesday
neither team had lost a game.
Sigma Delta Sigma Gold had a
6-0 record while the Beefs had
a 4-0 slate.
The Ragnots held down the
third slot with a 5-2 record but
Kappa Alpha Psi was close be-
hind with a 4-3 mark.

contest over the Ragnots 69-54
in the first game. John Putman
hit 26 points for the winners while
Scott White sank 20 for the losers.
In the second game Sigma
Delta Sigma Gold outscored Tau
Alpha Phi 59-44 to retain posses-
sion of first place. Ken McMinn
dropped in 12 for Sigma Delta
Sigma. John Womack hit 8 for
Tau Alpha Phi.
Friday. Feb. 21
Tau Alpha Phi won by forfeit
over Sigma Delta Sigma Red but
played an intra-squad contest.
John Clayton controlled the
boards in the game and was a
stalwart on offense.
Phil McCallum led Kappa
Alpha Psi over the Band 75-37.
McCallum sank 20 points.
Monday Feb. 17
With Phil McCallum scoring 36
points Kappa Alpha Psi upset
the Ragnots 61-58. Scott White
scored 15 for the losers.
Tau Alpha Phi defeated the
Rangers 35-20 in the second
game. Duane Lindsey was the
leading scorer with 12 markers.
