"have in recent months donated
approximately $3000 towards an
endowed graduate scholarship
to honor the couple announced
the Alpha Chi recently.
The honor fraternity chose
this method to honor the loyalty
and service of Dr. Otto Watts
V professor in chemistry now on
retired status who has served the
university since 1920.
The scholarship will be in form
'of a $100 per semester grant for
two semesters to Hardin-Simmons
University graduates desiring to
go to graduate school.
Open to any studenit in any
field no matter how long it has
been since .they have graduated
the scholarship should be avail-
able by the fall of 1968 .according
to Dr. Billy P. Smith sponsor of
Alpha Chi.
The goal for .the Alpha Chi
sponsored scholarship is $5000 by
the end of 1967.

Gary H. Potts commander of the
unit.
Second place in advanced drill
was awarded PR First Lt. Charles
D. Richmond. George D. Rice
PR master sergeant took first
place in basic individual drill.
PR Second Lt. Dale W. Stark
took a first honor in advanced
individual drill.
Trophies were presented by Dr.
Elwin L. Skiles university president.

faithfulness of Dr. Watts and his
wife" Smith said. "It is also
an attempt to encourage graduate
studies by helping worthy stu-
dents." Dr. Smith explained that the
fraternity hoped this was but a
beginning of an attempt to honor
long faithful university personali-
ties. "We've done nothing .to pre-
serve the contribution made by
these loyal people" he said "and
there is no better way than by
helping students."
"Many of these people devoted
their entire lives .to the university
and students do not even know
their names."
Dr. Otto Olive Watts one of
the honorees was graduated from
Simmons College on 1913 with a
B. A. He went to Rice where in
1916 he took another B. A. degree.
The University of Colorado in
1923 granted him a masters before
he continued his graduate studies
at the University of Michigan
during the summer of 1927.
In 1932 Watts took his doctor-
ate from Leland Stanford Uni-
versity and since has studied
under summer grants from the
National Science Foundation at
Tufts University in 1959 and
Georgetown University in 1961.
8 Advanced Cadets
Enlist In Reserves
Eight students were enlisted in
the United States Army Reserve
Thursday Feb. 2 at 11 a. m. by
Col. Johnny M. Rice professor
of military science at Hardin-
Simmons University.
The students have joined the
ROTC Advanced program at
H-SU for the spring semester.
Students in the ceremony were
Richard Brasher of Abilene Larry
Goldston of Abilene Terry Hale
of Irving and Van Newberry of
Hamlin.
Others were Frank South of
Canal Zone Skipper Steffens of
Abilene Thurman Williamson of
Abilene and Jay Young of
Abilene.

Juniors For Camp
Junior cadets in the Hardin- jects and can step into a position

cial treatment for the remainder
of the spring semester says Maj.

sible for the program.
A provisional company has been
organized ito provide leadership
and 'training for juniors who plan
to attend 1967 summer camp
Maj. Spoede said.
Leaders for the new company
include Cadet Lt. Col. Robert L.
Bates who has been selected as
the Tactical Officer and senior
officer for the company. As the
commanding officer he is re-
sponsible for all of the personnel
activities and evaluations of the
training unit.
He is responsible for the over-
all performance of each individ-
ual including morale espirit-de-corps
absentees and progression
in training.
Director of Instruction will be
Lt. Col. Chad Richmond. His
duties will center around the
planning and coordination of all
the training schedules and the
actual performance of them.
Major Jack Grogan will assist
the Director of Instruction in co-
ordinating the training schedules
and making necessary arrange-
ments with all other units in-
volved. Cadet Captain Glen Payne
secretary of the "LDC" Company
is charged with the responsibili-
ties of maintaining the rosters
absentees merits and demerits.
Captain Payne will also be the
Public Information Officer and
maintain the administrative files.
The new program according to
Maj. Spoede is designed to mold
the cadet into a confident ag-
gressive individual who has a
good knowledge of military sub-

of leadership and command the
respect of his subordinates.
Each cadet involved will as-
sume the positions of platoon
leader platoon sergeant and
squad leader before the semester
is over. He will have opportuni-
ties to give practical attention to
the principles of leadership and
military bearing which he has
been studying in the classroom.
Cadets of the "LDC": will try
their hand at bayonet drill battle
drill map reading compass orien-
tation communications tactical
problems and physical training.
The semester will conclude with
the completion of Combat Profic-
iency Test.
"With this experience behind
them Maj. Spoede said "cadets
should make a better showing at
i summer camp.
