From Large to Small;
From Few to Many
By BARBARA HOLSOMBACK

Why would a man who was
registrar at a large Northeastern
university move to a small West-
ern school to become Vice Presi-
dent of Academic Affairs?
Dr. Edward G. Groesbeck for-
merly connected with the Univer-
sity of Michigan is now at Hardin-
Simmons. His reasons range
from- appreciating the lack of
snow to wanting more contact
with students.
'First Love'
Dr. Groesbeck says "My first
love is academic affairs."
"The mechanization of the regis-
trar's office in a large institution
was taking me further and fur-
ther from the faculty and stu-
dents." "I was working with paper and
not people with computer pro-
grams and not educational pro-
grams." "My older son had just gradu-
ated from the University of
Michigan and my younger son
had finished high school" he
commented. "This break in my
family's educational program pro-
vided a chance to change."
"When President Skiles sug-
gested that I come to Hardin-
Simmons the opportunity of the
offer coincided with the chance
to change and I decided to make
the move."
Impressive Visit
When Dr. Groesbeck first vis-
ited Hardin-Simmons he was im-
pressed with both the quality of
the students and the faculty and
with the Christian atmosphere
and motivation.
He had always wanted to be
connected with a Christian in-
stitution. 'Damn-yankee'
Dr. Groesbeck said "The friend-
liness of Hardin-Simmons people
was a pleasant surprise and I am
being accepted even though I
was what is sometimes referred to
as a 'damn-yankee.' "
"Already I know all the faculty
most of the staff and . scores of
students."
Here at H-SU Dr. Groesbeck
feels that his work is the Lord's
work because there is no separa-
tion between church and school.
Opportunities
"I appreciate the opportunity
of getting to know so many Chris-
tian scholars who are dedicated
teachers just as I appreciate the
opportunity of getting to know so
many Christian students who ap-
pear to me to have great potential
in serving our Lord our country
and contributing to society in
general" concluded Dr. Groesbeck.
