Mrs. Mary Jares and three
sons, Bennie, George, and
Raymond Jares, all of Fla-
tonia; a brother, Edmund,
of Hostyn; four grandchil-
dren. A brother, Ed, pre-
ceded him in death.
Mr. Jares died at the age
of 68 years, six months and
20 days in a San Antonio
hospital Wednesday, Dec.
18, at 7:30 a. m. He was
a son of the late Matt and
Minnie Knezek Jares, and
was born near Praha May
28, 1889. He was united in
marriage to Miss Mary Rab
at Praha, daughter of the
late Mr. and Mrs. Albert
Rab Sr. Oct. 14, 1916.

homa, Arkansas, New Mex-
ico, , and Louisiana - who
have'been released from ac-
tive <^uty training and are
obligated by law to enter
the Ready Reserve.

The Flatonia High School
Chorus, under the direction
of R. B. Froehner, present-
ed a program of Christmas
music before the Flatonia
P.-T.A. at its regular meet-
ing in the High School Audi-
torium last Thursday eve-
ning, Dec. 19.
The Christmas selections
were very well received by
the audience.
After a short business
meeting, the Eighth Grade
home room mothers served
refreshments from a table
decorated in a Christmas

Special Festival
Being Celebrated
By Jewish Families
The festival of Chanukah
is being celebrated by Jew-
ish families all over the
world this week. On Tues-
day night, Dec. 18, in their
homes and synagogues, the
first Chanukah candles
were lit. On each succeed-
ing night another candle
was lit until eight candles
were burning brightly on
the last night. The festival
commemorated a great event
ip the history of the Jewish
people—the revolt and vic-
per share to $12 per share,
which is an increase of 20
percent over previous years.
At this same meeting
they voted to increase tho
interest on certificates of
deposit from 2 percent to 3
percent beginning Jan. _ 2,
1958. r
In adding to their serv-
ices, the bank joineH the
Federal Deposit Insurance
Corporation on May 8, 1957.

SCHOOL NEWS
Douglas High School is
happy to report having a
successful year of work so
far this year. The P.-.A.
has been reorganized and is
in high spirits and hopes to
do great things. The home-
room mothers plan to begin
their regular visits to the
school.
With the help and cooper-
ation of patrons and friends
the school has been able to
purchase 50 beautiful chairs
for, the school auditorum. C.
J. Sheridan, principal, has
'given Mrs. Arcfelia Godley
credit for originating the
chair movement idea and
having received $63 from the
P.-T.A. treasurer and per-
sonal donations he is happy
report that a total of

The Flatonia Blue Jays
are off tp-a running start in
the basketball season, earn-
ing four victories and no
defeats in four starts. The
boys have averaged 47
points per game and the
girls 23.
Nov. 26, the Blue Jay
boys defeated Schulenburg,
51-16, with Herman Wil-
liams high scorer with 23.
Flatonia’s girls won from
Schulenburg, 42-4, with
Annette Carsley scoring
high with 20; Nov. 29, fhe
boys won again from Schul-
enburg, 43-34, with Willie
Roy Evans high with 27; on
Dec. 5, Flatonia defeated
the Yoakum Lionettes,. with
the boys’ score being 57-29,
with Herman Williatns scor-
ing high with 32; the girls
won, 17-7, with Carol Glad-
ney high with 19; Dec. 6,
the Fljitonia gills, won from
Round Top, 12-6, with
Laura Evans making 8, and
the boys ended up with a
40-22 victory and Herman
Williams was once again
high, this time with 22.
