Remember that we are still carrying the largest and most com-
plete stock of wagons, saddles, harness, buggies, barb wire, nails, house
paints, roofing and all kinds of hardware to be found in the city.
In order to raise some ready cash we have some special prices to
offer for the next few days. NOW REMEMBER'we are not selling’BE-
LOW COST because all successful business concerns must make a
legitimate profit, to do beeiness or else they can not exist, and there-
fore it would be folly for ns to tell you that we sell below cost. BUT
REMEMBER THIS, WE WILL NOT BE UNDERSOLD. We have got
the goods, and always remember that we mift the PRICE.

(Special to The Herald.)
London, Sept. 4.—Grand Duke
Nicholas Xicholaeivitch, who is giv-
ing such a good account of himself
as commander-in-chief of the Russian
armies in the war with Germany and
Austria, is a second cousin of the em-
peror of Russia. He was born in St.
Petersburg fifty-eight years ago and
since his youth has been conspicu-
ous in affairs relating to the Russian
army. He^lms been president of the
council of national defense and in-
spector general of cavalry, besides
holding several othefr military offices.
For a number of years he was com-
mander of the military district of St.
Petersburg. At one time he was
mentioned as likely to be appointed
dictator in case of the retirement of
Emperor Nicholas from the throne.
Grand Duke Nicholas presents a
striking contrast in every respect to
his father, who was a notorious
profligate. The present grand duke
is universally respected. In 1907 he
was married to Princess Anastasia of
Montenegro.
The grand duke has often been em-
ployed on special missions by Em-
peror Nicholas, who has always re-
posed the utmost confidence in him.
In this connection it is recalled that
on one occasion Grand Duke Nicholas

the destruction of wolves, coyotes
dinand his throne, but likewise extri-
cated himself and his emperor from
an exceedingly embarrassing situa-
tion.
As in the case of nearly every
prominent member of the Russian im-
perial family the grand duke has
been the victim of several attempts
at assassination. In 1906 an attempt
was made upon his life while he was
and other predatory animals in West
Texas. One appropriation made for
this purpose has been exhausted.

fwere engaged in blank firing p’-ac- j

ed by the hiss of bullets about his
head. The firing was stopped, and
ap investigation showed that ball
cartridges had been used by ninety-
six men of the sharp-shooters of the
guard. The impatience of the con-
spirators had led them to open fire
at too great a distance, and the
grand duke escaped.
Scarcely six months later another
attempt on the grand duke’s life was
made, when a bomb was found < n
the railroad track between Tsarjoe-

he was to have .traveled, and a few
weeks later the train on which he
