$25.7 Million Target Set
In Development Program
A $25682500 Design for Development program
with a Phase I three-year goal of $10363000
was adopted by the Board of Trustees of Abilene
Christian College this morning.
The Board acted after the Steering Committee
of the National Development Council recom-
mended the goals and reported that $3.2 million
in gifts had been received by the College for tho
Design.
Also upon the recommendation of the National
Development Council the Board authorized the
formation of a committee to include members of
the Board and the administration of the college
to select and commission an architectural firm to
prepare plans for the construction of a $1496000
Coliseum-Auditorium.
Funds will be sought for four types of needs
during the Phase I campaign $5283000 for
construction $1055000 for campus improvements
$2250000 for endowment and $1775000 for oper-
ational supplementation.
The Phase I goal of $104 million will provide
four major buildings including the Coliseum -Auditorium..
The other three structures will be
a $1200000 Library the first stage of a Campus
Center to cost $900000 and Science Halls to be
added to the east and wesi ends of the present
Foster Science Building at a cost of $1350000.
The Coliseum -Auditorium will include 5200
permanent armchair seats ond the capacity can
be expanded to 6000 for such events as Lecture-
ship with the addition of temporary seating. In
addition to the main arena the Coliseum - Audi-
torium will include a physical education gymna-
sium a swimming pool handball courts and other
physical education and intercollegiate athletic
classrooms and facilities. -
The Coliseum - Auditorium will be designed to
accommodate daily chapel facilities for the De-
partment of Health and Physical' Education inter-
collegiate basketball and such events as Lecture-
ship Homecoming and Commencement.
The Library will provide space for an enroll-
ment of 3500 and will eventually house 200000
volumes compared to the current holdings of
101000.
Space in the Foster Science Building will be
more than tripled by the addition of two. wings
which will .contain adequate space for under-
graduate and graduate instruction and research.
Phase I goals will include first stage construc-
tion of a Campus Center which will serve as a
multi-purpose building containing recreation fa-
cilities food services the book store the post
office and conference facilities for groups up to
350. The first stage of the Campus Center will
