Powder Puff football game
prompts letter to coach from fan
GAME COMMENTS by Coach
Smith:
Even thought the varsity team did
not play this week, we did have a very
important game. It was only a pow-
der puff game, but in the greater
picture of life, it was perhaps the
most important game played at Wild-
cat stadium this year.
The following is a letter I received
and would like to submit to the public
because it says, in a far better way
than I could, what the Archer City
Wildcat Spirit truly is like.
"This is a good day. Oh, every day
is good or has the potential to be so,
but I think today is special. You see,
it’s very unusual to have the opportu-
nity to be in the presence of heroes,
and today we enjoy that luxury. Yes,
I said heroes.
. "Many of you will say that we have
heroes around us all the time, and I
respect that position. We know that
every Friday our “gridiron heroes”
will take the field to represent our
school in competition with other
school’s heroes. That takes place all
over Texas every week, so as impor-
tant as that is, it’s not what I’m talk-
ing about. I’m talking about valor
that is uncommon, something spe-
cial.
, "Last Thursday night, we all had
the opportunity to enjoy a comical,
lighthearted and immensely amusing
display as our young ladies played
flag-football and our young men as-
sumed the cheering roles. If you
missed that, you missed an opportu-
nity to see something truly funny and
fun. But underlying all that was the
heartbeat of something else. I can
think of no other term than “heroic”
im

to describe it. What could be more
heroic than braving new ground, sac-
rificing pride and sweat and time, to
accomplish something totally self-
less and worthy for another?
"That’s what we saw last Thursday
night. Girls entered an unfamiliar
realm in earnest competition, and they
gave us a great show.
"The young men who stuffed bal-
loons into their shirts, donned skirts
and makeup and put on a show of
their own, sacrificed pride and their
“macho” images in order to further a
cause greater than themselves.
"What could be more heroic than
these acts of our young people? I
applaud them and hope you will join
me in doing so.
"Of course, there was another hero
by whose presence we are blessed.
Young Tanner faces a huge fight, and
he does so with courage and a won-
derfully positive attitude. Some would
say that he has no choice, that it is
thrust upon him by circumstance, but
that is not so.
"Far less courageous people, adults
at that, face far less with much poorer
attitudes. Tanner exemplifies cour-
age with his smiles and willingness
to persevere. Tanner is a hero.
"And there are others. There are
those who organized the event, pre-
pared food, gathered items for the
raffle, worked behind the scenes, do-
nated time, money and hard work,
and did all they could to make the
event a success. It was that. It was a
great testimony as to what a school
and, indeed, a community, can do
when it works together as a team and
is attended by heroes.
Therefore, I encourage each of you
to share, if not this letter, the mes-
sage within it. We should be proud of
all the heroes among us. It is their
spirit that we, as an educational en-
tity, should be promoting and recog-
nizing. The faith to which I pledge
recognizes that sacrifice, and the will-
ingness to do for others is one of the
foundations of all we consider good.
These young people exemplify those
qualities.
"Let’s tell them we love our he-
roes.
"Sincerely, Bill Crowlev"
The Coach’s Corner: by Coach Smith
Eleven Rules as set forth by Bill Gates, Microsoft
In Bill Gates' new book, he lays out 11 rules that students do not learn in high school or college, but should. He
argues that our feel-good, politically correct teachings have created a generation of kids with no concept of reality
who are set up for failure in the real world. The list:
Rule 1. Life is not fair; get used to it.
Rule 2. The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something
BEFORE you feel good about yourself.
Rule 3. You will NOT make $40,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice president with a car
phone, until you earn both.
Rule 4. If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss. He doesn't have tenure.
Rule 5. Flipping burgers in not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping;
they called it opportunity.
Rule 6. If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.
Rule 7. Before you were bom, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying
your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you are. So before the rain forest from
the parasites of your parents' generation, try "delousing" the closet in your own room.
Rule 8. Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life has not. In some schools they have
abolished failing grades; they'll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the
slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.
Rule 9. Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested
in helping you find yourself. Do that on your own time.
Rule 10. Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.
Rule 11. Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.Back to Motivating Stories

I would like to thank everyone who
helped with the powder puff game. It
really was a great event. It worked
because of the generosity and kind-
ness of all the great people in this
community. It is a great thing to see a
community come together for a wor-
thy cause. Sometimes we get caught
up in inconsequential things and for-
get the big picture. It puts athletics and
