Kirk
Purcell, age
55, of Archer
City, Texas,
collapsed
while cycling
near Archer
City, Texas,
on Saturday
afternoon, October 1, 2005.
Funeral services were held at 2:00
p.m. Wednesday, October 5,2005,
at the First United Methodist Church
in Archer City, with Dr. Isaac
Butterworth, pastor of the First Pres-
byterian Church in Wichita Falls,
Texas, officiating. A private inter-
ment was held in the Archer City
Cemetery under the direction of
Aulds Funeral Home of Archer City.
Mr. Purcell was bom September
24, 1950, in Big Spring, Texas. He
had lived in Wichita Falls until his
junior high years, when he moved
to Alexandria, Virginia. He gradu-
ated in 1968 from Fort Hunt High
School in Fairfax County, Virginia,
where he competed in the state fi-
nals in wrestling, and was awarded
the Outstanding Athlete Award his
senior year. He earned a wrestling
scholarship to the University of
Colorado where he competed for
two years at the collegiate level. In
1974, he graduated from the Uni-
versity of Texas. During his college
years, he helped support himself by
bull riding, bullfighting, and work-
ing as a rodeo clown. In 1977, he
graduated from the Baylor School
of Law.
Before beginning his law prac-
tice, he worked as an entertainer in
New York City, appearing as the
opening act for Kinky Friedman,
by performing as the character of
“Rev. Billy Joe Bob Sweeney.”
In 1978, he began his law practice
in Fort Worth, but continued to
pursue his interest in writing and
entertaining, and for many years,
hosted “Walk Tall America Night,”
an event attended by rodeo clowns,
local politicians, and friends from
all walks of life. Kirk developed a
successful law practice helping less
fortunate people in the Fort Worth
area. Mr. Purcell later moved to
Houston where he continued to
practice law and earned a reputa-
tion as a skilled mediator.
Kirk pursued a wide range of
mental and physical activities with
a great deal of enthusiasm, includ-
ing creative writing, extreme ski-
ing, bicycle racing, and fly-fishing.
He recently decided to take a break
from practicing law and returned to
his family’s roots in Archer City.
His keen sense of humor and con-
cern for other people will be greatly
missed by many friends and by his
two sons, Graham Campbell Purcell
and Garret Campbell Purcell, both
of Houston; his parents, Graham
and N ancy Purcell of Wichita Falls;
four brothers, Dr. Blaine Purcell of
Tyler, Texas; Blake Purcell, and
his wife Cathy, of St. Petersburg,
Russia; Davis Purcell, and his wife
Jenny, of Fort Worth; Kell Purcell,
and his wife Beverly, of Vail, Colo-
rado; four sisters, Jannie Purcell
Stewart, and husband Jay, of
Lancaster, Texas; Melissa Killmer,
and her husband Bill, of Alexan-
dria, Virginia; May Lynn
Turtletaub, and her husband Dave,
of Dallas; and Sarah Bell, and her
husband Vince, of Dallas.
He was preceded in death by his
mother, Betty Smith Purcell on Au-

You don't have to be a caped cru-
sader, police officer or firefighter
to be a hero. You can simply be an
American Red Cross volunteer
blood donor! The Red Cross is in
search of local heroes to help en-
sure a stable blood supply. Area
residents can help by becoming
regular volunteer blood donors.
"Heroes come from all walks of
life," says interim CEO Pam Head
of the Southwest Region, American
Red Cross Blood Services. "We are
asking all healthy residents to do-
nate blood for our neighbors in
need. It only takes 60 minutes of
your time to be a super hero."
Now more than ever, patients
need your help. You can help ease
shortages by donating at the Scot-
land Community Blood Drive on
Tuesday, October 11 from 3:30
p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Knights of
Columbus Hall. Each donation
can save up to three lives.
"Recent history has shown the
need to be prepared for personal
and national crisis. As the largest
supplier of blood in the country, the
Red Cross works diligently to col-
lect sufficient quantities of blood
to respond when needed," says
Evelyn Krahl, blood drive consult-
ant/coordinator.
To donate blood, a person must
be in good health, be at least 17
years old and weigh 110 pounds or
more. Volunteer donors must also
show identification at registration.
Please bring a Red Cross donor
card, a valid driver's license with a
photo or other form of official pic-
ture identification.
