Wildcat Cqgers Hold First Drills
By ROBERT BURCH
Returning seven experienced
lottermen the ACC cagcrs open
supervised drills today In pre-
paration for one of the toughest
schedules ever played by a Wild-
cat team.
Coach Deo Nutt's chargers
spent the past season turning
what was supposed to be n re-
building year Into n highly suc-
cessful 17-9 record a Southland
Conference Co-Championship
and a berth In the NCAA Reg-
ional Tournament finals
Only Spencer Pickens and Jim
Morgan are missing from that
squad as the Wildcats seek to
Improve on the record and go
farther Into the NCAA finals.
Heading the list of lettcrmen
that are still around Is Charles
Cleek All-Southland Conference
All-Southwest Regional Tour-
ney and 2nd Team All-Texas
College selection.
The 6-7 senior scored 513
points for a J9.7 average and
led the team in rebounds.
Jerry Morgan 6-7 senior was
also chosen to the All-Tournament
team besides being select-
ed Honorable-Mention All-
Southland Conference.
Terry Priest 6-3 senior is a
versatile man who played both
forward and guard last season
in his first season here after two
years at Henderson Junior Col-
lege. There shouldn't be any short-
age of guards on Nutt's team
for at least three' years because
sophomores John Ray Godfrey
and Larry Adams are just getting
started although they play like
they've been team-mates since
Junior high.
The two out-front men aver-
aged 16 points a game between
them and played defense very
well.
The Wildcats have returning
letterman David Wray and Gor-
don Balch to see a lot of action at
forward and guard respectively.
Though the squad Is stocked
with fine players improvement
on last year's record will not be
easy. The quality of the oppon-
ents will make it hard for the
Cats to build up long winning
streaks.
The Southland Conference will
offer Arkansas State which
shafed the championship last
year and Lamar Tech the runner-up
as top foes.
The intcrsectlonal chart is
made tougher with the addition
of some new teams the cross-
town rivals and perennial power
Oklahoma State.
In mid-December the Abilen-
lans will take on Murray State
Kentucky Wesleyan and Wes-
tern Kentucky in a swing
through the Blucgrass State
which is a seedbed of quality
basketball.
A month later the Cats go to
the mountains of Colorado for
an encounter with the Air Force
Academy.
The Wildcats split victories In
four games with McMurry and
Hardin-Slmmons last season
beating each team once as these
two rivals again havo fine teams.
The Wildcats will try to
avenge last year's opening sea-
son loss to Oklahoma State as
they visit the Stillwater team
again this season.
The Wildcats are ranked sec-
ond in the nation in field goal
percentage last season and a hot-
shooting team usually makes an
exciting game. '
The tough schedule and the
exciting racotfor the Conference
Crown should bring the fans
and a cheering mob always adds
a lot of color to any game.
Lamar Tech Leads in SLC
By TERRY SMITH
A full schedule of games line
the docket for this week's South--land
Conference action beaded
by the ACC-Lamar Tech contest
to be played in Abilene this Sat-
urday. After a week's layoff the Wild-
cats will be attempting to avenge
a 17 to 3 loss suffered at the
hands of the Cardinals last year.
The Cats in addition will be
looking to start out their con-
ference debut with a bang by
beating the Southland Confer-
ence favorites.
The Lamar Tech Cardinals on
the other hand invade Wildcat
territory with an impressive list
list of credentials led by the
Southland Conference top scorer
Hal LaFitte and by Philip
Primm the most Impressive
quarterback in the conference.
As If this weren't enough the
Cardinals have average 23 points
per game while holding their
opponents to a mere 10.5 points
per game.
Lamar Tech made a big step
toward the Southland Confer-
ence crownroom last week by

trounced by West Texas State

Obic put on quite a display of
aerial excellence as he completed
21 passes for 214 yards; but West
Texas' total offense of 323 yards
was too much to overcome.
Touchdown glory was evenly
distributed as no fewer than
five West Texas Staters scamp-
ered into the end zone. Hank
Washington and Tom Moody led
the attacks followed by James
Cowcll Brian Deadly and Ron-
nie Mankln.
This week's action finds ACC
