MIDGET WILDCATS
Fireworks boomed from the get-go
as Sam Smith electrified the crowd
with a 70 yard kickoff return on the
game's first play in Saturday’s 32-0
win by the Archer City Midget Cats
over the home-standing Electra
Midget Tigers. Following crushing
blocks by Travis Veitenheimer and
John Schreiber, Smith blasted through
Electra's special teams and raced un-
touched to give the Cats a 6-0 lead.
Electra's first possession ended with
a punt, and on the next play from
scrimmage, John Bachman took a
pitch from Sam McCord and raced 52
yards for the Cats' second score of the
quarter. After no return on the ensu-
ing kickoff, the Tiger's quarterback
was tackled in the backfield for an
11-yard loss by the Cats' Ethan
George, and then subsequently lost a
fumble to the ferocious Wildcat de-
fenders on the Tiger's four-yard line.
The Cats then iced the great defen-
sive effort with a quick touchdown
pass from McCord to Kolby Rowe
and a 2-point conversion run by Sam
Smith to increase their lead to 20-0.
On the next kickoff, Ty Campbell
and Bryan Mooney stopped the Ti-
gers with no return. A pass play by
Electra was almost intercepted by
Ben Hammond, and the Tigers were
forced to punt. On their next posses-
sion, Blaine Willet and Bachman car-
ried the ball 34 yards before turning
the ball over at the Tigers' nine-yard
line. Electra was then forced to punt
after two stops by Kyle Long and one
by Hammond but fumbled the snap
on their own five yard line. Follow-
ing a holding penalty against the Cats,
Willet scored on an 11 yard run.
Electra then drove the ball to the
Cats' 26 yard line only to be stopped
by Jacob Reid and Ben Tucker that
forced another change of possession.
After a brave defensive effort by the
Tigers along with two costly penal-
ties, the Cats were faced with fourth
and seventeen .Blaine Willet then fired
a long pass to Smith for a 28 yard
gain. A 14-yard precision pass fol-
lowed from McCord to Rowe to set
up Willet's one yard plunge behind a
fine block by Rob Tucker and the
final score of the day.
Although the offense was impres-
sive with its great mix of passes and
runs, the defense was unbelievably
overwhelming. Kyle Long had 8 in-
dividual or assisted tackles followed
by Ben Hammond and Kolby Rowe
with 6 each and Ty Campbell with 5.
Electra gained only 34 yards in total
offense, which is a tribute to the total
team defensive effort displayed by
Archer City.
On a personal note, I was somewhat
shocked and embarrassed by the treat-
ment some of our more "unruly" par-
ents gave the great, big, sensitive guy
official that expertly called this game.
I have your comments on tape. I
haven't decided what to do with them,
but I know where you live. Ho! Ho!
Ho!
PEEWEE WILDCATS
The Archer City Peewee Wildcats
continued their impressive play with
a dominating performance against
Electra's Peewee Tigers with a 20-0
win in Saturday’s divisional game in
Electra.
Following an 11 yard pass comple-
tion from Mason Deerinwater to
Patrick Dayton, Hayden Bates (140
yards on 11 carries) scampered 46
yards to pay dirt and a 2 point conver-
sion run on the Cats' first possession.
The onslaught continued as the Cats
recovered the ensuing on-side kick.
Following a tremendous lead block
by Tyler Hammond that took out two
Tigers, Dayton (70 yards on 4 car-
ries) swept untouched into the end
zone on a speedy 50 yard run. The
Cats' defense held the Tigers to three
and out in the next series, and in their
next possession drove the ball to the
Tiger's 18 yard line on a 40 yard run
by Bates. Penalties and a toughening
defense by Electra stopped the drive,
however, the Archer City's first half
lead remained 14-0.
The Peewee Cats' running four-
some of Bates, Deerinwater, Dayton,
and Charlie Weakley continued the
ground assault in the second half cul-
minated by a spectacular 22 yard run
by the workhorse Weakley (100 yards
on 7 carries) in which he broke three
tackles on his way to the end zone.
After a sustained drive by the Tigers,
Cooper Twyford and Cole Sitz threw
Electra's quarterback for a 16 yard
loss after they had driven the ball to
the Cats’ 20 yard line. No more offen-
sive threats were mounted by the
Tigers, and the game ended in a shut-
out for the Cats.
Tremendous offensive line play by
Hammond and Twyford along with
Brady Enlow, Zach Reynolds, Justin
Baker, and Manon Mooney was a
key factor in the Cats' fifth victory
against no losses.
To be considered for selection to
the National Honor Society, students
must have:
a. completed a full year at the ninth
grade level
b. completed at least a full semester
in Archer City High School
c. achieved a cumulative grade av-
erage of 90 calculated by the same
method as the valedictorian and salu-
tatorian
d. maintained conduct satisfactory
to the faculty committee and admin-
istrators
e. demonstrated excellence in lead-
ership, provided service to the school
and community, and be of impec-
cable character
Sophomore, junior, and senior stu-
dents with the appropriate grade point
average have met the minimum scho-
lastic requirement. While the aca-
demic criterion is important and is
considered first, membership is never
considered on the basis of grades
alone.
The character aspect of selection is
based on
a. teacher evaluations
b. conduct grades
c. discipline reports filed in the
principals' offices
No individual teacher's evaluation
will determine a student's selection
or non-selection. The information is
simply to be used by the faculty com-
mittee as a way to get an overall
picture of the potential member's char-
acter.
Students who are considered for
selection will be issued a form to be
completed, signed, and submitted to
the faculty committee for verifica-
tion.
Students who are asked to fill out
the forms are not guaranteed selec-
tion.
After all records are compiled, se-
lection is determined by a majority
vote of the faculty committee. Stu-
dents who are selected will be noti-
fied by mail. Additionally, the names
of selected students will be announced
and posted throughout the school.
Once selected, the student will be
required to sign a special code of
conduct contract to become a mem-
ber of the organization. The final step
will be a formal induction into the
chapter during a special ceremony.
As stated in the National Constitu-
tion, decision of the faculty commit-
tee is final. If, however, a student
and/or his parents wish to challenge
the decision, they should follow the
school's complaint procedure. Stu-
dents may certainly feel free to talk
with the sponsor to gain insight about
non-selection but the faculty com-
mittee is under no obligation to re-
veal information concerning non-se-
lection. A student who is non-se-
lected may be considered during the
next selection period.
