Shakespeare on stage at Royal Theater 2005 Archer County Jr. Livestock and
Rehearsals are underway for A
Night of Shakespeare opening Fri-
day, February 4. The timeless clas-
sic work of William Shakespeare will
make its first appearance on the
Royal stage in a production featur-
ing two one act condensed versions
of two of the Bard's classic comedies.
The first act of the evening will be
the Baker's Plays edition of Much
Ado About Nothing, abridged to one
act by Jerome McDonough. The sec-
ond act will be the I.E. Clark edition
of A Midsummer Night's Dream,
adapted into a one act play by Cecil
Pickett. The plays are directed by
Barbara Phillips and produced by
Jerry Phillips. Barbara has directed
and appeared in other plays for the
Royal, and Jerry has produced sev-
eral Royal offerings. A Night of
Shakespeare is their first project as a
Director/Producer team.
The project was designed to pro-
vide an entertaining evening of the-
ater by capturing the essence of
Shakespeare in condensed form as an
introduction for those who are unfa-
miliar with these classic plays. The
staging, costuming, and acting are
true to Shakespeare's original texts so
seasoned theater buffs will not be dis-
appointed. Seeing these enchanting
miniature versions of Shakespeare's
comedy will leave audience members
wanting to see the full play, and such
is the hope of the Phillips's collabo-
ration at the Royal.
The cast and crew will be com-
posed of Royal veterans and several
newcomers in key roles. Barbara
Phillips will have a reunion of sorts,
as several of the actors are previous
high school one-act play competition
actors and former students. Cos-
tumes and set construction are in pro-
cess after scheduling setbacks dur-
ing the holidays.
On Sunday afternoon, February 6,
there will be a Student Matinee of-
fering students an opportunity to see
the production as a reduced cost. The
show will run for two weekends with
evening performances on Feb. 4, 5,
10,11, and 12. For tickets or further
information call 574-2489 or log on
to www.royaltheater.com.

Send-off planned for Johnson family
as they ready for trip to Chicago
Randy Johnson has a big weekend
coming up. Friday night, friends and
family will be holding a going-away
reception for the Archer City man,
and a benefit will be held Saturday at
Lucky's in Wichita Falls. Then, bright
and early Sunday morning, he and his
wife, Donna, and niece, Jeri
Crawford, will board a plane to Chi-
cago, where he will begin the testing
necessary for the medical procedure
that will prolong his life.
Johnson suffers from scleroderma,
and doctors have recommended a
stem-cell transplant, which is only
done atNorthwestem Memorial Hos-
pital in Chicago. Fund raising efforts
have been held in several locations in
the last few months, plus an account
is open at State National Bank to help
the family with expenses. He received
the call this week that they are ready
for him in Chicago, so he and his
family will fly out of DFW airport
Sunday morning.
The experimental procedure will
require the transplanting of Randy's
own stem cells. The Johnson's will be
in Chicago for 3-5 months, although
they will be able to return to Texas
from time to time. Anyone wishing to
correspond with Randy, Donna and
Jeri while they are gone, can mail
them letters and cards to The Seneca
Hotel, 200 East Chestnut, Chicago,
IL 60611, or email them at
emtijohnson@aol.com
Friday night, friends and family of
Randy and Donna’s invite you to
come to the Wells Fargo Bank Com-
munity room between the hours of 6
and 8 p.m. to say good-bye and wish
them well. They would love to see
all their friends before they leave.
Another fund raiser will take place
Saturday at Lucky's at 1402 North
Scott in Wichita Falls. Owner and
friend of the Johnson family, Bran-
don Slay says the food will be ready
by 1 p.m. and all proceeds ($5 cover,
and $5 to eat) will go to the Johnson
fund. There will also be a raffle to
raise additional funds. The band Next
of Kin, from Oklahoma, will be play-
ing for a dance from 9 p.m. until 1
a.m. For more information about the
fund raiser, call 766-6300.

"Being an effective school board
member today, as in the past, is no
easy task," said Clark Boyd,

edgeable about many complex edu-
cational and social issues and carry
out initiatives and directives from
both federal and state governments.
To face these demands of governing
public schools they give countless
hours of personal time."
The following men and women

ACISD honors board during January
The administration of Archer City
ISD takes advantage of Governor
Rick Perry ’ s proclamation that Janu-
ary of each year be used to recognize
the leadership of school board mem-
bers. The theme of this years ac-
knowledgment is “Lighting the Way”.
There are over 7000 board members
serving and lighting the way for 1042
school districts across Texas. We
believe local control of public educa-
tion is very important and this board
is actively involved in setting tax
rates, adopting a budget, reviewing
curriculum, hiring employees, ensur-
ing accountability, monitoring legis-
lation and requiring a safe environ-
ment. We firmly believe that deci-
sions on school programming are best
made by local, elected representa-
tives. No one else can understand the
community’s unique problems, val-
ues, culture, and circumstances bet-
ter than your elected board members.
The elected citizens currently serv-
ing include the following individu-
als. The year in parenthesis repre-
sents the year the member was origi-
nally elected. Position #1, Dr. Joe
Hayley (2000) is serving as President,
Position #2, Joe Roderick (1999)
member, Position #3 LaRee Cowan
(2004) member, Position #4 Charles
Barham (2002) Vice-President, Posi-
tion #5 Steve Tucker III (2003) mem-
ber, Position #6 Bill Enlow (2003)
Secretary, and Position #7 David
Shaffer (2003) member. The Archer
City ISD board has oversight of an
annual budget of $4,200,000,536 stu-
dents, and 88 full or part time employ-
ees.
The adopted Mission of ACISD is
to prepare students to be contributing
American Citizens via the workplace
or college. The board adopts goals
each year to establish a vision and
expectations for the administration,
staff, and students. Although our board
members come from different walks
of life, they put on a collective hat and
pull together as a team toward a com-
mon goal of helping students be suc-
cessful.
Board members have to be knowl-
edgeable about many complex edu-
cational and social issues in order to
carry out initiatives and directives
from both the federal and state gov-
ernments. Thus, in addition to regular
and special called board meetings,
your board members give some of
their own time at night and weekends
to participate in seminars and training
sessions to be better prepared to lead,
so our students can achieve.
Please be slow to criticize the mem-
bers without knowing all the details
that went into any given decision.
Register to vote and participate in the
board election that considers two or
three positions each year. Being a
board member has intangible rewards
and requires many hours of volun-
teering. Make a special effort to tell
each school board member that his or
her hard work has been noticed and is
truly appreciated. The ACISD nor-
mally meets on the third Monday of
each month in the Superintendent’s
office, beginning at 7:00 PM. The
public is always welcome to attend.
The 2005 Archer County Jr. Livestock
Show ended last Saturday with the annual
Sale. Preliminary totals (before add-ons)
for the sale were $53,639.97.
