Hansen, ‘Midway Monster’
Of 50s, Gets E.P. Honor
Wayne Hansen, a starter and
star with the Chicago Bears for
10 years, will be inducted into
the El Paso Athletic Hall of
Fame on April 3 at the annual
awards dinner at the Sheraton.
He will take his place of
honor at the dinner alongside
other El Paso football greats,
Ken Heineman, inducted in
1957; Jesse Whittenton,
enshrined in 1967, and Don
Maynard who received the high
honor in 1968.
Hansen is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. A. W. Hansen, 201 North
Avenue C; is the brother of
Mrs. Bob Drennon, 901 East
San Antonio; and uncle of
Rodney Drennon, a member of
the Kermit Yellow Jacket
squad in 1972.
The April 3 dinner will be
the 18th annual affair honoring
El Paso athletes in three
categories. Dolph Quijano,
former heavyweight and light
heavyweight boxer, has been
previously announced as one of
the three living El Paso athletes
to be honored April 3.
Another selectee in that
category as well as two in the
administration or coach’s class
in sports and two in the
athletes of the year division
will be announced shortly.

Daubers Split Wins
* / Under the guidance of
coach Mrs. Ken Barr, the
eighth grade Dauber volleyball
squad claimed still another
victory Tuesday as they
dropped the Wink Junior
Wildcats in two consecutive
games in the Wink Wildcat
Gymnasium.
In the first game of the
two-game set, the Daubers
collected a 15 to 8 victory over
the Kittens.
' Scoring for the Daubers
were Carla Burns with five
points, Misa Mays with three
points, Lettia Ditto with three
points, Daina Healy with two
points and Toni Willmon and
Foydell Nutt with one point
each.
The Daubers seemed to take
the court in the second game
with their stingers out as the
Kermit team allowed the home
team to score only one point.
Miss Mays was the leading
scorer for the Kermit team in
the second game as she scored
a- total of ten points. Also
scoring for the Daubers in the
final game of the set were Miss
Ditto with two points, Miss
Nutt with two points and Miss
Willmon with one point.
SEVENTH
The junior Dauber
volleyball team was not as
fortunate as their senior
counterparts Tuesday as the
seventh grade Wink Wildkittens
edged the Kermit squad 14 to
12 in their first encounter and
15 to 9 in the second and final
game of the set.
Scoring for the Kermit team
in the first game were Thalia
Pace with five points, Helen
Hawkins with three points,
Tracy Kingston with two
points, Marietta Hix with two
points and Cheryl Kingston
with one point.
In the last game of the
match Miss Hawkins lead the
scoring for the Daubers with
five points. Also scoring for
Kermit were Lois Samford
with two points, Miss Pace
with one point and Dina
Harrell with one point.
The Daubers will host the
Crane seventh and eighth grade
volleyball squads in Kermit
Junior High Gym Tuesday.
Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
made the 1973 selections after
careful study.
“Hansen’s credentials
certainly qualify him for a
place in El Paso’s Athletic Hall
of Fame,” said Porth. “That
goes for Quijano, too. We feel
fortunate in having athletes of
their ability in The Hall of
Fame.”
Hansen brought fame to
himself and to El Paso in his
long pro playing career that
spanned some 12 years.
Even before that, however,
he was an outstanding football
player at UT El Paso, then
Texas Western.
Recruited from Monahans,
where he won all kinds of
honors in football, basketabll
and track, he immediately
became a Miner star as the
team’s center in the days when
football players went both
ways. He captained the Miners
in his senior year. He made the
All-Border Conference team.
Later, in 1969, he was chosen
on the All-Time Rocky
Mountain team, made up of
players who had illustrious
football careers at schools in
Arizona, New Mexico,
Colorado, Wyoming, Utah,
Montana, Idaho and West
Texas.
Hansen was drafter by the
Chicago Bears in 1950.
In that era of pro football,
there was only one league —
the National Football League,
composed of 12 teams and
each team was limited to 33
players.
The Bears during the 1950s
were one of the top teams in
pro football. Called the
“Monsters of the Midway,”
they lived up to their name.
Hansen was the only rookie
to make the starting lineup. He
played offensive guard in 1950,
switched to defensive tackle in
1951, and replaced Clyde
(Bulldog) Turner in 1952 at
center and played that position
in 1952, 1953 and 1954.
In 1955, Hansen was
switched to strong side
linebacker. It was at that
position that he gained his
greatest recognition as a pro
player. He was the Bears’
defensive standout for five
years, from 1955 through
1959.
Hansen was named to the
Pro-Bowl for three years. He
was the defensive captain of
the Bears in 1956, 1957 and
1958. Professional football in
the late 1950s first hit the
television tubes and El Pasoans
were able to watch Hansen
play some of his biggest games
with the Bears.
Wayne retired from pro
football in 1960 but the newly
organized Dallas Cowboys
enticed him out of retirement.
He played two seasons with the
Cowboys before retiring as a
player for good.
During the off-seasons he
helped coach at UT El Paso,
s Oklahoma and Stanford.
\ Hansen is currently
employed by the Teledyne
Ryan Aeronautical Co.
He is married and has four
children. He makes his home at
9505 Cosmos Drive in El Paso.

CYCLIST PICKS UP
MISSING PIECES
Automobile parts aren’t just
passing interest to Dr. David
H. Walworth, a bike-riding
physician from San Jose,Calif.
He makes it a habit to stop on
his way to and from work and
pick up the stray pieces he
finds along the way.
He has now accumulated 35
pounds of brakeshoes, springs,
gas caps, nuts, bolts, hubcaps,
and wrenches which have fallen
off cars.
“We all laughed in the
beginning,” said his wife,
Dorsa, “but when Dave
brought so many nuts and
bolts home we began to
wonder-how many can you
afford to lose before the whole
car falls apart?”
