If you were here this time last year you
might have noticed an unusual number of
ex -athletes on campus for ACU's first
varsity-alumni weekend. They won't be
here this weekend but it's not because
they don't want to.

scrimmage against the 1980 Wildcat
football team.
Not many fans saw either game. The
basketball game in Moody quickly became
a runaway until the alumni started
getting three points for field goals and two
for free thows and the football game
was played under near-Arctic conditions.
But those who saw the games were
treated to something special. Un-
fortunately anyone who didn't see them
may have missed their chance forever
thanks to a poor Lone Star Conference
rule.
The rule says that a team can't play
against any outside organization which
means nothing but intrasquad scrim-
mages are allowed in the spring.
That interpretation is a big mistake
hurting both the teams involved and the
schools' athletic programs. I always
thought the purpose of conferences was to
promote competition. But with this rule
the LSC effectively has limited actual
competition to the regular season.
The rule also has limited the in-
volvement alumni have with the athletic
program. It's like saying "We'll take your
time money and effort but we don't want
you playing against the kids." The odd
thing about it is that no one seems to know
why that rule was made in the first place
and why it applies to activities like varsity-
alumni games in the LSC when schools

Buchanan third Ail-American
my last game against Lenoir-Rhyne and I
thought that would be a terrible way to
finish the season But this makes it better."
When the game against LRC was over
Buchanan's season stats read 842 points a
22.8 average and 399 rebounds an average
of 10.8 per game. In 52 games in three
semesters at ACU she scored 1220 points for
a 23.5 ACU career scoring average.
In high school Buchanan was named all-
state twice and all American as a senior
after scoring about 4700 points for May. She
was chosen to play on the U.S. team in the
Fan American Games in Mexico City the
summer after graduation then attended
Tyler JC for two vears.
At Tyler she was named all-conference
and all-region in addition to all-America
and led her team to a second place finish in
the national junior college tourney as a
sophomore. Buchanan played for SFA one
semester before transferring to ACU.
