Men netters win three ;
women blast LCC A&l
By MARK EVJE
Assistant Sports Editor
The men's tennis team won three of its
four matches last week before Thursday's
match against Wayland Baptist College the
results of which weren't available at press
time. Now the team must take to the road
next week for its last three conference
matches.
The women's team won all four of its
matches last week and also played WBC
Thursday. They will play Hardin-Simmons
Monday at ACU.
The men defeated Texas Wesleyan 7-2
April 2 and beat Texas A&I by the same
score the following afternoon for their first
Lone Star Conference win in two tries.
Lubbock Christian came to town Saturday
and left without winning a single match.
Then the Wildcats went on the road
traveling to San Angek) for their third LSC
match which they lost 5-2. In LSC play only
five singles and two doubles matches are
played instead of six and three. The loss
dropped the men's record to 1-2 in con-
ference and 14-5 for the season
The women's team also shut out LCC last
Friday in nine matches to pick up their
ninth win of the season against four defeats.
They played two matches Saturday
defeating Texas A&I &0 and Texas Woman's
University 8-1. The women's team also
traveled to San Angelo Tuesday winning by
a 7-2 margin to give them a l-' -4 record going
into Thursday's match.
In the four women's matches last week
Angie Shoemaker was undefeated at No. 1
singles. Lisa Ward at the No 2 spot and
Sylvia Layfield at No. 4 singles. The No 1
doubles team of Shoemaker and Ward also
was undefeated along with the No. 2 doubles
team of Paula Plasek and Layfield.
Ron Elston the men's top player was
undefeated in his four matches last week
raising his season record to 25-2. Mike Wyatt
also won his four matches at the No. 5
position.
Coach Cecil Eager has been pleased with
the performance of both teams this season
especially the women who have won every
match they've played against other Division
III schools
The men haven't been quite as successful
but Eager said they are a much improved
team from last year's.
"The men have had a couple of tough
matches in conference against East Texas
and Angelo where I felt like we had a chance
to win and just missed" Eager said.
The men will try to get back on the win-
ning track in conference play next week as
they travel to San Marcos Saturday for a
match against Southwest Texas State. They
have a match Wednesday in Huntsville
against Sam Houston State and Thursday in
Nacogdoches against Stephen F Austin
before returning home.
Eager said those three matches "will be
interesting'' but added that playing them
on the road doesn't bother him.
"It doesn't matter that much" he said.
"Sometimes it's better to play on the road
because you get keyed up a little more."
