legislative redistricting that looked like a
"low blow " for two of Abilene's lawmakers
State Heps Gary Thompson and Walter
Grtlbbs - may not be so low after all
A redistricting plan that set up nine pairs
of incumbent legislators to run against each
other in the 1982 general election was ap-
proved to 2 by the five-member Legislative
Redistricting Board on Oct 2K
Thompson chairman of ACU's depart
ment of government and Grubbf are one of
the nine pairs
Faced with pairing the two incumbent
representatives had three choices oppose
Optimist
each other in the next election not seek re-
election or move and seek re-election in
another district
Thompson said that because he and
(irubbs share many friends in the city and
are close personal friends themselves an
election against Grubbs would be divisive
and unconstructivefor the city
Neither (Jrubhs nor Thompson seriously
considered retiring from the legislature.
Thompson sa id
"Therefore the logical option is for one of
us to move outside the city limits and seek
re-election in the other district adjoining to
the west and north which is District 7H."

Nobel Committee
selects two fathers
of ACU students
The fathers of lour ACU sudents are
members ol a commission that will receive
this ycar Nobel Peace Prize
The United Nations High ommission for
Refugees will be the recipient of the award
Raymond Mkanda father of Merriam
and Evelyn Mkanda and Ben Blavo. father
ol Dorothy and Margerel Blavo are United
Nations representatives from their home
state oi Tunsenia East Africa
The foreign students had not heard a
great deal about the announcement hut

The Nobel Committee announced the
winners Oct IS in Geneva Switzerland at
the Nobel Prizes Convention and the prize
will be awarded later this year
The award was given to the commission
because of its work with the estimated 10 to
IK million refugees around the world
The continent of Africa has only 12 percent
of the world's population but more than SO
percent of the world's refugees The com-
mission has given the people of Africa food
clothing and a chance to get education said

Donations for the world's refugees poured
in from 45 countries last year with a total of
$105 million given she said The I'nited
States gave $57.7KU)u0 to the commission

This is a chance for those who have lived
outside of the United States to share some of
the food and culture ol the countries said

About 24 countries in the Far East Africa
Europe and South America will be
represented with food booths said Mrs
McBroom.
Booths will be prepared by faculty
members and Mission Outreach par-
ticipants she said The International Club
composed of students who come from
countries other than the U S . also has been
invited to participate
Over 3U) people are expected to attend the
come-and-go banquet she said Those in-
terested in participating should contact Mrs
McBroom in the Missions Center by calling
Ext 2272 or 673-7908

dealt a "low blow" to Thompson and him-
self Heatly with 14 terms under his belt said.
"The Speaker promised me as dean of the
House that I wouldn't be paired "
But Heatly angered Clayton. Thompson
said by announcing his support last year lor
Hep John Bryant of Dallas for Speaker of
the House Glayton was then on trial on
charges of bribery of which he was cleared
He later went on to gam a fourth term as
speaker
Clayton announced last week that Abilene
was "shafted" by the new redistricting plan
