Does God really
want us to depend
on him totally?
looking up
ft
Jeff Lcving
I'm probably the most philosophical six -year-old
that has ever been. Yup the things I think
about amaze me sometimes. Well for the past
9 few days I 've been wrestling with a tough one.
Yesterday while Mom was fixing breakfast
I began thinking about the Sermon on the
Mount something my Sunday school teacher
had read to us the other day. Some of the things
Jesus said didn't make sense.
While Mom started some washing I sat
munching on some toast and thought some
more. It seemed like Jesus was saying that only
people who had problems were really happy.
How strange!
Thoughts really started rolling as Dad drove
me to school. How could poor people be happy?
How could lowly people inherit the earth? How
could people who are sad be glad? Things just
didn't make sense.
That afternoon my sister was being a real
pain and in a fit of anger I punched her pretty
hard and she went crying to Mom (as usual). As
a result I got my bottom warmed with the
paddle and was sent to my room for the rest of
the afternoon.
As I lay on my bed staring at the ceiling Dad
had painted last weekend I got to thinking
again. Boy when I grow up I'm gonna be my
own man. I won't have to listen to anybody. I'll
Hff have a good job buy everything I need and be
really happy. I'll have it made.
Finally Mom called me to dinner.
Today was a pretty good day. We had a ball
game after supper (Pee Wee League) and Dad
was home early. He helped me with some tough
homework; I had to read a whole page in Run
Spot Run! and practice writing the alphabet
ten times! Afterwards we went out back and
threw the baseball back and forth to warm me
up. As we played catch my mind wandered
again. One thing I liked about Jesus was that he
called God his father. If God is anything like my
Dad He must be pretty neat. But as for those
other things Jesus said I still couldn't figure
them out.
Well we won the game tonight. Dad's a great
coach; he always lets everyone play and we
still win! Sometimes. But anyway he bought
us all an ice cream cone afterwards.
Mom hurried me into the tub as soon as we
got home. She still has to scrub my back but I
can almost reach it now. As she soaped me up I
began to think again. I remembered the part
where Jesus said "Ask God and he will give you
good gifts." Now that sounds good especially
since my birthday is in a few weeks!
But as I climbed into bed I couldn't help
think about those other strange sayings. It was
almost as if Jesus said that God wanted us to be
dependent on him for everything! I was still
thinking about it as Dad tucked me into bed.
'Good night Jeff."
"GhightDad."
Maybe someday I'll figure it out.
Rolling Stones bounce back again
The Rolling Stones: Tattoo You (Rolling Stones
Records) For all of you Stones fans who have
been wondering if the boys were going to make
it take heart. This time they're back with a
vengeance.
This is the best Stones a Ibum since ' 'Exile On
Main Street." Mick Jagger seems to have
rediscovered his voice Keith Richards sounds
as though he really has gotten off drugs to pay
more attention to guitar and Charlie Watts has
some of his best licks ever on the drum kit.
This is the most convincing the Stones have
sounded in years. This album is a real rebound
and a true relief to all fans.
Best Cuts: "Start Me Up" "Neighbors"
"Heaven." (A)
Ian Hunter: Short Back And Sides (Chrysalis)
Hunter is a very reliable performer who always
sounds good. This album is no exception.
This time the "man behind the shades"
explores ground ranging from rock to jazz to
reggae and it all sounds good. Guest horn work
on "I Need Your Love" makes the song the
perfect jazzblues fusion.
Admittedly this album doesn't measure up to
his last release but it is still worth a listen and
should not be passed up.
Best Cuts: "I Need Your Love" "Noises"
"Theatre Of The Absurd. " (B)
Pretenders: Pretenders II (Sire) The new
album from Chrissie Hynde and the boys is
good but it brings a few disappointments.
This album while every bit as skillful as the
f kaleidoscope
' Jeff Slatton
first is just not nearly as much fun. Another
problem is that the record includes two tunes
("Message Of Love" and 'Talk Of The Town")
that were released earlier on the "Extended
Play" mini LP.
Again this is a good album but I expected
better on the basis of their other two records.
Best Cuts: Pack It Up I Go To Sleep Louie
Louie. (B)
doe Walsh: Thera Goas The Neighborhood
(Asylum) Once again Joe Walsh has released
an album. And once again it sounds just like all
of the previous Joe Walsh albums.
From the sound of things Joe has been with
the Eagles too long. Maybe if he were to leave
the Eagles and reform the James Gang he
could get out of his rut.
While nothing's really bad on this album
there's just not much that is that good. Joe
Walsh's main problem is that his first solo
album was dynamite and he hasn't been able to
measure up to it since.
Best Cuts: "Life Of Illusion" "Down On The
Farm."(C-)

Guess what? Nobody's perfect
To the Editor: .
OK so the secret's out !
Social clubs and the campus police aren't
perfect but neither are the students and our
opinions or the professors or the deans or the
Optimist or the staff or the Bean or the 8:00
class we have to struggle through or the Bean
or "Chapel or the churches in the area or
Abilene or Texas (well maybe not Texas) or
the Bean or student government or elections
or freshmen or even ACU.
If everything and everybody were the pic-
tures of perfection life would be totally boring
not to mention the fact that page A-3 of the
Optimist would be blank.
Concerning the letters on clubs I really think
some of the letters against them are out of line.
Don't condemn the whole dub for the actions of
a few.
Club is certainty not for everyone and
wQQgfiyou 3Mfffe
everyone is certainly not for club.
As for the campus police come on ! Give them
a break! They're doing the best they can with
what they have. It's a whole lot better than
having no security at all.
But then again my opinion is not perfect.
I hope this letter is considered "out of the
muck" because it was intended to be. I am in
full agreement of raising the standards of
letters on these issues. I think it's about time the
students of ACU try to build up each other in-
stead of tearing down the Christian bonds of
brotherhood.
