Shrimp landings at Aran-
sas Pass and Rockport during
the past week jumped nearly
a thousand per cen\ over the
previous week, according to
figures released by Bert
Strock, statistician for the
U. S Bureau of Commercial
Fisheries.
Strock reported that land-
ings at the two ports during
the past week totaled 387,328
pounds compared with only
38,841 pounds landed at the
two ports during the pre-
vious week.
The statisticians said one
of the causes of the in-
creased landings was due to
young shrimp moving into
deeper water. The landings
were made by 295 trawlers,
he said.
Aransas Pass landings for
the past week included 279,-
536 pounds of brown shrimp
and 14,480 pounds of whites
Landings at Rockport for the
same period were 91,207
pounds of browns and 2,105
pounds of whites.
No landings of pink shrimp
from the Bay of Campeche
art a were reported at either
port, Strock said
Landings at the two ports
during the past week were
up 96.855 pounds over a com
parable period in 1963, ac-
cording to the figures. Last
year 101 trawlers landed 209,-
4.73 pounds.
Week end landings at Ar-
ansas Pass included 199,004
pounds of browns and 7,120
pounds of whites. Landings
at Rockport for the same pe-
riod were 53,911 pounds of
browns and 2,094 pounds of
whites.
A breakdown of 199,004
pounds of browns landed here
over the week end showed,
Strock said, 119,205 pounds
to be in the 51-65 count size,
70,014 pounds in the 43-50
count size. 2,671 in the 36-42
count size, 2,862 pounds in
the 31-35 count size, 1,630
pounds in the 26-30 count
size and 2,622 pounds in the
21-25 count size.
A 45-day closed shrimping
season within 10$ miles of
shore is in effect until July
19. The shrimping ban doe*
not apiply to bait shrimp.
