Chicago at Boston.
Si. Louis at Philadelphia.
Detroit at Washington.
Cleveland at New York.
Nowhere should baseball fans
complain cf the brand of ball being
played in the major leagues this
season. Or for the brand that was
played in the Texas League for that
matter. The Lone Star State en-
joyed it’s closest race in many a
year. But back to the majors, the
Chicago Cubs, the St. Louis Cardi-
nals and the New York Giants are
still battling it out for the National
League lead, the former named
clubs winning single games Tues-
day, while the Giants got definitely
back in the running by virtue cf a
double win. In the American League
thq New York Yanks won iliCir
fifth straight game while the lead-
ing Detroiters were losing to Wash-
ington. The Yankee win put them
7 1-2 games behind the Tigers.

It is an.axiom that one of the
surest ways to please a man is to
compliment him for some excellence
which is not obvious.
For example, it would probably
bore Mr. Rockefeller if a new ac-
quaintance told him that he enview
his ability to make and keep money.
But if a guest in Mr. Rockefeller's
I house commended the host for
switching off the electric lights as
he stepped from one room to anoth-
er, the elderly oil king would prob-
ably beam, because he is said . to
take pride in little household
economies. Perhaps he is a trifle
doubtful about the wisdom of them,
and therefore likes to be assured
that others approve of this thrift.
William Wrigley, Jr., the late
chewing gum magnate, established
a goed account ih the fearly days erf
his business by exploiting a hobby
of a prospective customer. Learn-
ing that the proprietor came to his
office at 6 a. m. every day, two
hour's before the rest of liis staff,
Wrigley determined to be there
ahead of him. The man was ' so
< pleased by this indulgence of his
j hobby that he received Wrigley cor-
dially and thereafter bought chew-
ing gum from him.
Lord Chesterfield once said:
"Men have various subjects in
Which they may excel, or at least
would be thought to excel, and
though tfcey love to hear • justice
done to them where they know they
excel, yet they are most and best
flattered upon those points where
they wish to excel yet are doubtful
whether they do or not.”
The art of flattery is not in say-
ing what is obvious nor in sayfhg
what is untrue. It is in being pleas-
ingly sympathetic. The dub golfer,
like Charles Ayo, if intelligent,
like Charles Ayo, knows that he .is
a dub, and will not thank anyone
to tell him that he £s good. But he
may be pleased to be told by his
companion that he has been • a
splendid sport and has admirably
restrained his temper in the face of
circumstances which would ' have
driven most men mad.

For the benefit of. one Cuero
father who flatly refuses to let his
eager son take part !n high school
football, we might say that it is one
of the most unkind acts we can
think of. Football uniforms have
been so designed to protect every
vital part of the body and with a
little effort on the part of the play-
er to get in shape, it isn’t likely he
is to be injured. Think it over
again before definitely deciding to
keep the youngster from playing.
