The Gila monster is a species of venomous lizard that is native to the Southwestern United States and is also found in the Mexican state of Sonora, Mexico. Within the United States, the Gila monster can be found in states of Arizona, some parts of California, Nevada, Utah, and New Mexico. The Gila monster is a heavy lizard; typically slow-moving; and can grow up to 14 inches (on average) long. The Gila monster is the only venomous lizard native to the United States and is also the largest surviving lizard species in the United States.
