[The Anderson County Jail]
This is a photograph of the second Anderson County Jail. The jail was built on the southwest corner of the courthouse square in 1879-80. It was, at the time, the most architecturally advanced building on the square of Palestine. Its clock tower, rising one floor beyond the two-story sheriff’s office and jail, could be seen all the way to New Town, the part of town near the railroad depot. The jail was used until 1931, when it was considered inadequate for county needs. It was torn down and a more modern structure built, the three-story white brick building that now stands on the site.

[Dickson and Willard - Young relatives of James "Jim" Conaway]
Dickson T. Carrick (b. 1872) and Willard W. Carrick (b. 1875). These two boys were somehow related to James "Jim" Conaway. Raised in, Waxahachie, Texas by their parents, White L. Carrick and Camilla Rozina (Thompson) Carrick. The father died in 1884 and the mother re-married and they moved to Dallas around 1889 or 1890. The boys both died of consumption 2 days apart in 1896 and were buried in Waxahachie. The picture was included in the papers of the Conaway family that were donated to the Palestine Public Library some years ago.

[Lewallen Conaway]
Tin type image of Lewallen Conaway, who was born March 14, 1832 in Mississippi and died September 10, 1862, the son of James Sr. and Mary Conaway. He was a Private in Co. A of the 20th Texas Cavalry, CSA, during the War of the Rebellion and possibly died during the war. A search of known burials in Houston and Anderson Counties reveal no burial location for him. This photo was found among the papers of the Conaway family that were donated to the Palestine Public Library some years ago.

Wright was a businessman and was involved in politics; he served as mayor of Palestine, Texas for several terms.
