Sinking Hydraulic Piles.

Description: Patent for new and improved sinking hydraulic piles. This design has for its object "the sinking of wooden or other piles in quicksand or ground in which the lateral pressure upon the piles practically prevents their being driven beyond a certain depth. To that end [the design] make[s] use of a jet of water supplied at the entering-point of the pile, and in connection therewith [the design] also use[s] weight applied at the upper end of the pile" (lines 8-16).

Car-Coupling.

Description: Patent for a simple, durable, and safe car-coupling that will not accidentally uncouple, and can uncouple without the operator stepping between the cars. Caustic-Soda Process.

Description: Patent for mixing anhydrous sodium-sulfate with saw dust, heating the mixture in a furnace to 880 degrees Celsius and letting it partially cool. This process will convert the sodium-sulfate to sodium sulfide which when combined with the saw dust creates a liquid which will not oxidize because of the saw dust. The saw dust prevents the mixture from becoming volatile. When lime is added to the mixture then caustic soda is created.
