In her interview, Watkins discusses her family background, and her education at St. Frances de Sales School in Virginia, a Catholic boarding school for African American girls. She also discusses her education at Texas Southern University and Tuskegee University. While a student at TSU, Watkins participated in lunch counter and bus station sit-ins in Houston.
