Weeks joined the Navy in July 1940 and was assigned to the USS San Francisco (CA-38) at Pearl Harbor as a deckhand. His pre-war duty involved working with the catapult for the ship’s observation planes. He later maintained guns and was promoted to third-class gunner’s mate.
